I think it's time to call Ben Thomson up to play the remaining games. At the very least, team's will not take liberties with Hughes.

Yeah remember when Marc Savard played on a line with Milan Lucic? It really did such a good job of dissuading guys from taking runs at Savard...

I still find it extraordinarily hard to pin the vast majority of goals he gives up on him. It’s as if people expect him to be superhuman and be the best goalie in the world every night because that’s what he’d have to be to consistently play well behind this team defense
I don’t need great, but better than .871 in his last 8 without a win would be nice.

You are wrong, we have not taken a step forward this time.
Eh that's just wrong, almost all the players we wanted to see a take a step forward did. The older vets took steps back, besides Severson and PK. I would consider that a resounding success all things considered. BigMack is almost impossible to analyze because of the weird season and defense.

Okay so we have to pick a side, either the defense is NHL caliber and he should be above .900 or it isn't and we shouldn't be even remotely shocked he's .871. He is a relatively streaky goalie playing behind a defense that has had 3 new guys routinely rotated in the past two weeks and all 3 have had massive layoff and 1 is learning the new system. No continuity at all between them. Two of them definitely aren't NHL caliber defensemen and the other might also not be. This is all while considering that we are still a young team who makes a lot of mistakes and our two best defensemen are both offensively oriented and are going to have some high risk turnovers.

Rocky Trottier was a horrible pick. Bill MacMillan ran this franchise into the ground.

Including Colorado MacMillan was the GM for less than two years - for what was an expansion franchise and a mess pretty much since its inception in Kansas City.

To be fair, if you're going to hammer him for picking Trottier he also deserves credit for drafting Dano, Joe Cirella, Bruce Driver, Pat Verbeek and Aaron Broten.

It’s a combination of poor defense plus at least one stoppable goal basically every single game of late. I put no stock in this season at all, but I’m not going to say Mac has been good enough. He hasn’t been.

Fairly lengthy discussion on the AHL/ECHL thread here.

Thanks for posting this article as it adds a bit more detail.

That's fair but basically all of his bad goals have still been 2 on 1s and guys wide open in the slot. Even if he should make the save there is no way he has confidence right now in himself or the team so I don't blame him.

Unfortunately he proved very early in his career that he's capable of superhuman performances, and now that has become expected from him.

Devils fans think that every goalie is like Marty Brodeur, consistently excellent every game of their career for 20 years.

There were a couple games where he got shelled and didn’t play so poorly and then a couple games where he played well (only allowed 2 goals) and both goals were trash. Like that game we lost 2-1 to the Capitals in OT. 2 goals on 40 shots, but both were weak. Including the OT winner, which hardly deflected.

For what it’s worth, I’ve counted 24 goals stoppable on him this year and he’s allowed 83 in total. That’s just under 29%. I would need to find the number of non-empty net goals that have been scored around the league this year and then add up how many goals I counted stoppable on my list, but that’s probably around the league average. Last two years I think I counted about 27%-28% of the goals scored in the league as stoppable, but I think it’s even higher than that this year.

There’s quite a few guys over the 30% mark and some (*Cough* Matt Murray *cough*) over 40%. Mike Smith has always been terrible since I started doing this and near the highest percentage in the league. The first two years his save percentage was horrid, but this year it’s .923% over 24 games with 19 goals I’ve counted stoppable on 53 goals allowed. He seems to be good for one terrible softy every game and if he doesn’t allow one, there’s almost always a poor stick handling error (a weak wind up the boards) that goes straight to an opponents stick and leads to a goal.
