If the price is cheap I take Yakupov in a second. Everyone says he works hard, and with Hynes structure he may be able to turn things around.

Very cool article. I personally love Hynes as a coach. He's working with what he has and is improving everyone.

I think he and Shero could be here for the long haul. I like his quote about the Stempniak trade. Recognizes the importance of the picks and giving guys chances.

It's a 3-4 year rebuild that we're a year into. I would say we're almost ahead of schedule. Boucher, Blandisi, DSP, and Palmieri are all new this year and they're all top 9 guys with potentially two top 6 guys (maybe 3 but certainly not holding my breath). Add in Zacha and we're looking at a team already with a lot of young high level talent.

All this the growth(especially Boucher) I attribute to Hynes. I had him written off as an AHL fodder and now he actually looks like a possible 2nd liner. Palmieri doubled his career high in goals and is now a 1st line RW. Hynes has given the right guys the right opportunities and almost all of them have run with it.

Glad you enjoyed the article. For the most part, I really like Hynes as a coach too (and I think there are always going to be quibbles with any coach, just the nature of being a fan), and I think he has done a good job with the team this year. You could see the growth in the team this year, even if we still have a ways to go, and I feel like he's got the team buying into his vision, and the respect of the players, which is huge.

The rebuild took a big step forward this year with what we saw from guys like Boucher, Blandisi, and of course Palmieri. Hynes seems to be bringing out the best in them, and it will be exciting to see what he could do with guys like Zacha and JQ down the line.

Cory had some good, insightful quotes. Nice to hear from him that Hynes actually coaches (and I think that's especially beneficial for young players to have more of that hands-on approach) and that jives with a tweet I remember TG making about how Hynes was the most involved head coach he'd seen with the Devils in terms of things like running the drills, which normally were left to assistant coaches. Also like how he said that Hynes doesn't demean players; it seems more like he treats them with respect and they treat him with respect, too.

I think TG said that was what Shero envisioned when taking the job if I recall correctly. I think it's just him being realistic, but we're getting better fast and there's a lot of reasons to be optimistic.
 
I would be interested in seeing Zacha at LW with Blandisi as his center, I would love for Zacha to be a top center for us but that move might maximize both of their skill sets.

Hynes to me is like having a developmental coach in the NHL.

Oh and did you know that if an NHL team has more goals than the other at the end of the game, they win?

The more I focus on Blandisi, I don't think he is that bad defensively.

Whenever he is playing a center role in the defensive zone, he is surprisingly strong there. In last night's game, he made a nice play to break up a cross-ice pass in the D-zone. In 4-on-4 and 3-on-3, I've never felt nervous with him out there.

I'm starting to think he looks bad defensively because he is playing wing. To me, it's a much different transition to playing wing in the defensive zone where you're not doing much most of the time to being actively involved as a center.
 
I could definitely picture Blandisi being a Mike Ribiero-lite type center in time. Not a big goalscorer, but a fancy playmaker. Not quite the vision/instincts of a Ribiero or Gomez though, at least not yet.

Zacha-Blandisi-DSP could be a very interesting #3 line next year, an equal combination of skill and thump. If you get some production from them and add another RW for the top six you have some hope at last for this forward group.

I just see a young forward that had all of 24 games in the AHL before getting called up to the NHL. I think there are times when he tries to do too much, which is probably natural for a kid who was an overager last season who could pretty much do what he wanted to against mostly younger kids.

Almost everyone on this team is bad at defense, because almost all of them are under 50% corsi bro!
