Post-Game Talk: Devil VII

I've mentioned this before, but I would also really like to see us play heavier.

Not even hitting, I don't give a f*** about throwing bumps after the puck is gone.

I'm talking about cycling and possession. We're really big and we have guys who are really good at cycling. We have no gameplan on how to convert it into offense or how to adapt our skill and turn cycling into chances. That's not rocket science.

Get a speedster or two who can get the puck and start the thing reliably, and get Panarin and Zibanejad passing and shooting off of good, long possessions.
How about crashing the net, screening the goalie, and attacking rebounds? Aka playoff hockey.

This is why I’ve been so out on Panarin for so long. He refuses to do this, and instead of fleshing out a roster around him with guys that will, we pander to his style and exacerbate the problem.

Trochek was a step in the right direction for me. Of course he completely shits the bed in the playoffs. But for f***’s sake why was Kane even a consideration in the context of the rest of the roster? He was exactly what the team did NOT need.

There is a reason why random scrub goalies tend to do well against us. Teams tighten up defensively around them and we don’t adjust to make their life difficult.

This begins and ends with Panarin. I think Drury knows this. I think this pisses Drury off as much as it pisses me off. I hope that he can find a creative way to address the issue.

I feel like as the season went on Trocheck was jerked around more and more by Panarin and the coaching staff and his game was completely ineffective by the playoffs. Still take him 11 out of 10 time over Strome.

Thinks it’s pretty safe to say most of us go above and beyond that amount

That's the disgusting part. We waste so much time following them and the efforts in game 3, 4, 5 and 7..... smh

Stand still and puck watch.
If you're skating, drive by and stick check.
Puck movement? LOL
Coordinated Teamwork? LOL
Effort? Depends on the mood.

At the end of the day you need elite talent to win Cups. Seattle may go on a nice little WCF run but they're not winning the whole thing.

Matthews is a horse. Short of McDavid pulling a Lindros to come here, he goes top 5 in a league wide redraft considering age, body of work and ability. I only take McDavid, Bedard, Makar, and MacKinnon over him.
You take the 5’9” prospect who has never played a game in the NHL over the guy who is averaging 50 goals per 82?

You have to find the Bennetts, Hagels, Verhaeghes, Nichushkins, and Bertuzzis before they're expensive.

Here are some random names:

Walker Duehr - undrafted free agent in Calgary's system. Big body and can absolutely fly. Plays RW. Would cost absolutely nothing and he's a 4th liner if he doesn't pan out.

Ryan Lomberg - There may already be a bit too much smoke on this guy, but they call him the Lomborghini because he's -and I quote- "capable of zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds and topping out out at 217 MPH." Undersized but would go through a wall. Florida can't stop shooting when he's on the ice and the analytics tell me he has more production to give.

Max Pacioretty - Literally hasn't been healthy in three years. As they say in Moneyball: "that's good for us, he's cheap. Sounds like an Oakland A already."

Oh yeah, and fire the marketing genius who came up with “No Quit In NY” as a slogan. Taylor made to be thrown right back in your face.
South New York, aka Miami, picked it up and ran with it.

I'm rooting for Miami and Tkachuk. REAL EASY TO ROOT FOR.... the exact opposite of this Rangers squad.

I'd love to see them go on a miracle run inspite of having Staal in the top4.... Staal is being hard carried by Montour.... like Mahura-Gudas has been decent.

If/when Florida gets a LHD, like an Orlov, they will be set. Love their forward group.

At least we weren't invested... we knew what they were...

this team is Fools Gold.
Here’s my thing - if John Cooper is coaching that same team that just laid an egg in round 1 we are winning the championship. He would have adjusted to the adjustments made by the Devils in game 3. It’s been the coach all along.

You’ll get more Ryan Reaves and Ben Harpur types and like it

Been watching since the 80's, this is most unlikeable group of players I've ever seen.
This is the other problem I have. I don’t know if it’s a them problem or a me problem.

I’m old. I have a hard time not looking at these guys like little kids living the good life. Any illusion that these are the superhuman heroes that I idolized as a kid has completely evaporated.

But I will say, Laf’s dumb smirk, Kakko’s constant need for psychotherapy, Panarin’s refusal to address the media or take any accountability. I kinda just don’t like these guys. I feel like if they had some personality that would also translate to the ice in the form of the tenacity and snarl we all wish they had.

Garland is cheap and they are looking ot move him.

It'd happen after a Panarin trade.

Put the kids on the MacKinnon diet. Sweet potato, chicken, vegetables. Knock the bubbalicious out of Laf's mouth. Put child safety controls on his Grubhub. No more junk. No more poutine. Only slow foods, for his slow self.

You should be be to have a soft-ish yet uber-skilled player like Panarin on the team -- the problem is, the rest of the supporting cast needs to have a different make-up.

He's cheap for what he brings.

He's not the kind of cheap where we can add him without moving a guy that has a NMC.

If there was a chance it could happen, I would be interested. He drives 5v5 offense.

Speaking of Arizona, Nick Schmaltz is another one where you put him out there at even strength and his team shoots like they have a machine gun.

The 2 big x-factors for me (besides the lack of passion) were as follows:

1) The Rangers seemed 'ok' with staying to the outside in the offensive zone rather than crashing the net. They took shots from places that were not dangerous and had no chance of going in.

2) They didn't hit. And they do not need to throw bone-jarring hits. They don't need to be Trouba hits. You can slow a guy down and knock him off the puck simply by hitting smartly, pinning him against the boards, etc. The only way to counter speed is hitting. And this is why I blame the coaching staff. It just didn't seem like a directive / priority.

Our AZ Scout @bobbop is not a fan of Schmaltz from what I remember.

But move Panarin for futures... Give Laffy top6 time so he can sink or swim... Add Garland. Step in the right direction.

Laffy can replicate Panarins production in the Playoffs for a fraction of the cost.

Yeah, sure, but you can't just run at the net because you really, really want to.

You need a scheme, support, and everyone working as a unit.

Agreed about getting pucks and bodies to the net, but you need to have the puck in order to do those things.

The Rangers spent too much time turning it over in bad spots, giving up the neutral zone, getting stuck in their own end. Whenever we finally got the puck back, we usually had to dump and change lines. There's no flow when we're constantly chasing the game.

Age might be part of it but even a few years ago I loved guys like Hank,Callahan, Dubinsky, Girardi etc.

ive liked Lomberg for a long time. he's a real pain in the ass too. the closest thing to Sean Avery there is, probably better at hockey too.

now find me a couple of cheap, decently quick PMD's, send Trouba and Schneider into the sun
