Post-Game Talk: Devil VII

Bang on about no system or structure. When the entire team's strategy is "go make a play" (Gallant has said these exact words throughout his tenure) you cant be surprised when the players look like they've never taken the ice together. Their no show against the Devils should earn this team a hardass coach who will make them play a certain way.
I don't even think it needs to be a hardass, necessarily. Torts would bench you because the goal you scored was too nice. That's a hardass.

I just want a clear identity, an offensive scheme, and you have to play the way the team plays. That's just a coach.

We've seen this exact pattern with Gallant elsewhere. He makes everyone feel good and they overperform year one. After that it gets more and more chaotic.

You talk about putting the kids in a position to succeed and my point is just that it's not just ice time. Changes need to be made in how they play and how the team plays to put them in a position to succeed.

I don’t always agree with @mas0764 , but this is surely the worst Devils team we will see for at least five years. If the Rangers we’re going to win the Cup with this core, this was the year.
Aren't they going to run into cap problems? I guess they'll end up getting Meier at a discount since he's sucked, but the math is still looking a bit hairy over there...

If the Rangers had gotten the 1st pick and taken Hughes, the team would be so much better now and going forward.

Hughes is that rare player that makes the entire team better. Having a player that can always get the puck out of the D zone, through the neutral zone, and into the offensive zone is as good an asset as any team can have.
I don’t disagree but we didn’t win that lottery. It’s like saying if we had gotten the 1st overall pick with mcdavid we’d be a better team….

I honestly wouldn't even mind Brunette with a Jacques Martin-esque defensive coordinator. At least there would be a semblance of a plan on offense. The desire to play Instagram hockey is a cancer that runs deep and the last 2 coaches have failed to address it because they weren't respected by the veterans(Quinn) or let it spread to the rest of the team (Gallant). If no change is made at Head Coach i might agree with you that theirs no hope for next year.

It boils down to buying into your system, you coach and your team.

This team 10 years ago went balls to the wall every shift. They had half the talent and willed their way to the net. They literally never quit. When they lost, they lost while leaving it all out there. They couldn't score, sure, but that wasn't for a lack of trying.

Florida reminds me of that, only 10x the offensive talent and half the goaltending.

We now had the offensive talent, but no guts. That's why this loss hurts so much more. Because we all feel like we didn't see their next level that we know they have, except for Igor and maybe CK.

So in the end, it's an everything problem. But the lack of system is what really nailed it. They could get by with some lack of effort if they played their game, or had a game to play. You can't beat a cohesive speed team like the Devils while winging it like it's a pickup game.

Don’t start making too much sense here

The avs young core is significantly better than the devils and they won’t be able to keep everyone. They also lost in the first round but whatever

Hughes ability to skate into a zone untouched and create offense singlehandedly is special. He's like Scott Gomez on roids in that regard

Knowing us the Devils will become a dynasty starting with a cup win this year

Yes.

You can disagree with me and maybe I'm wrong, but the bolded is my angle.

They f***ed these kids up and I wanna go no further with these kids or any other kids as long as the same people are in charge.

Whiffing on multiple top ten picks is a fireable offense for anybody that so much as said hello to these kids in the hallway. Frankly, I don't think we're mad enough about it and the team has won enough games here and there to placate the fanbase.

That was the chance to set ourselves up for years and we blew it. Enough with the excuses and enough with the cope. They stink compared to what they were supposed to be and compared to what most teams get out of picks like that. It doesn't happen multiple times by accident. The Rangers did something wrong and I don't want the same people continuing to do it.

If you put that on Gorton and believe Drury is bringing in changes, or that it's going to get better eventually, you're entitled to that opinion, but I've seen enough. f***ing up those two picks was eating the apple in the Garden of Eden and everyone who worked in this organization during their development thus far should be gone. I don't trust these people to do anything.

This is all true, but aside from saying "Bring in new staff" -- here on a message board we will want to debate on-ice personnel direction.

Of course we need to bring in staff committed to developing offensive skill. We have to clear out the dinosaur ideas that lead us to value trading up for Braden Schneider because he's big but not bothering to secure a Dawson Mercer or Anton Lundell when we desperately need scoring forwards. All that is true.

But say we do that..... say we bring in the new staff...

What do you want the new staff to do vis-a-vis roster construction?

I say tear it down and find new kids to start over with. The new staff isn't fixing Trouba, Kreider and Panarin before they are ancient.

Find some 18 year olds and go from there.

There are other star players who don't skate much faster than him.

His brain doesn't operate fast enough, is his bigger problem. The team bears responsibility for that. Teaching a young player how to play is kind of important.

Do you watch professional sports?

Absolutely there are teams who have figured out how to develop young players and others who haven't. Have you ever heard of the Chicago Bears?

So, a guy who utterly dominated his age group before the NHL couldn't process information quickly?

Beyond absurd.

The only thing that changed was almost everyone was faster than him at the next level.

You went to football to make a point about hockey?

But since you brought it up, the Bears failures can be traced to their drafts, injuries, and bad luck, but most of all due to their inability to get a great QB.

NFL teams almost never win without great QBs.

As someone who presumably watches the NFL, I would have thought you knew that.

In the 2 years that Gallant has been our HC, we've had problems playing against fast, quicker teams and teams that clog the neutral zone. The Devils exploited these 2 shortcomings in this series. They were way faster, execution and skating wise and adapted when they were ahead in games, by clogging the middle of the ice, making us look slow.
Rangers never adapted and that's why our 5V5 play has been terrible the past 2 years, relying on our PP and goaltending to win games...sound familiar...That's on the coach!

Don’t even bother to go on social media. The Spittin Chiclets are making fun of us, the devils social media is making fun of us, their trailer park trash fans were singing our goal song after the game, if we’re going to be hated we might as well assemble a team of assholes who don’t take shit.
They're right! This Rangers team was never that good - its inadequacies were covered by excellent goaltending (a familiar tale).

If the Rangers do fire Gallant and hire Q,ill never watch them again with that piece of shit behind the bench

Good point and I’ve said this too, he seems to have great results in year one when expectations are lower etc but as they ramp up his results go down

He comes in and inspires initially but then it tails off

Also seems like he does better with less in terms of skill players, this team is overkill in that direction in terms of mindset/style, every team needs stars but they also need guys that let stars play their game and shine

Failure on multiple levels, coaching management and development

Hughes would've been developed as 3rd line center behind Zibanejad and Strome however, with no #1PP time. Take that into consideration.

Nonsensical post. but you do realize he didn't start his NHL career on the top line in NJ.

Players with skillsets like Hughes will rise to the top quickly wherever they play.

Comparing the skills of any of the Rangers kids to Hughes is laughable.
