Devils tightened it up an we had trouble adjusting. We couldn't get a lot of high-quality scoring chances. The Devils played such a tight defensive game, so we HAD to capitalize on the PP. We didn't and this was the end result. That's why we lost.
And I didn't realize how much of a scumbag Timo Meier is.
Exactly...they were sending one in on the forecheck most of the night with 4 back in a box through the neutral zone with the D holding the blue line at the zone entry and the forwards slotting in to force plays at the line.
Only ways to beat this are to attack with speed or dump and chase, and the game predictably was a trapfest.
Some of the calls were terrible, but at this point, this team needs to expect that and win anyway.
The D on the Hughes goal needs to knock Palat out from in front. That's only a goal because Igor was screened and it's not like Palat is some immovable specimen in front of the net. It still hit the shaft of Igor's stick before going in.
Rangers also struggle with big goalies because they always insist on shooting low pad (talking about forwards, not D shooting for rebounds). You beat big goalies either by making them move and going five hole, or shooting over the shoulder like Kreider did and picking a corner. He really didn't play *that* well and the Rangers got completely away from what was working for them on the PP which was using perimeter movement to opportunistically throw the puck at the net. Way too much reluctance to shoot from the first unit, and way too much reluctance to shoot from the second unit, especially the forwards.
If this was the best the Devils can do, we still win the series IMO. But the Rangers have to do better, and that starts with not falling back into bad patterns they did during their regular season play.
