Sorry, what's the downside to giving this kid a 9 game tryout, apart from burning a year. He's mature, he's always on the right side of the puck, he can keep up, he can win draws already, he looks an interesting fit for an obvious team need in the 3 hole. I fail to see the harm, it isn't going to kill his confidence imo.

Only downside is if you end up losing a decent asset to waivers over a 9 game tryout.
