Agreed. Imo, theres more potential to unlock too, especially in younger guys like Veleno, Berggy and Soderblom have looked better in the Toddfathers system.
Shows how good of a fit Todds system is for the Top 6 and depth players and thats the receipe for a cup

Soderblom on a 5 game point streak. Berggren looks good. Johansson looks like a different player. All of a sudden the youth is driving the bus and doing a hell of a job.

At some point you have to acknowledge that this is probably a sign of piss poor player development rather than "Poor us, we got the top picks in bad draft years."

They're on the second night of a back to back, on a western road trip, and McLellan said after the game a bunch of the players are sick right now. They still have the talent/coaching on the roster to steal a couple points they probably don't deserve. That's what good teams do, steal points they don't deserve sometimes.
If Lalonde is coaching, the nucks probably win by 3 or 4 and the team gives up

People will eat more crow when he brings in some elite talent with that massive cap space we're about to have. Razor and Mo's contracts will look legendarily genius in 2 years but you could make the case for right now
There are numerous teams that will have massive cap space.
Fat pass on getting in the Mitch Marner/Mikko Rantanen race and outbidding whoever wants to throw 7 x $14M at them.

Free agency is gonna be a mess of absurd contracts over the next few years until teams get tight with cap space again.

Lots of teams struggle on the western Canada trips, but the good teams find ways to win. Calgary outplayed them yes, and being outplayed by Edmonton on the road isn’t exactly unexpected as even great teams will do that. Vancouver was a trap game by all accounts they should have lost, 2nd of a back to back on the road and 3rd game in 4 nights right after beating a top tier Edmonton team. The deck was stacked and they found a way to win. That’s what good teams do. Are they contenders or elite? No but I think it’s on to admit they aren’t a bad team anymore.

guy way too eager to blow money on ufa superstar imo.
1) spits in eye of every player who took team friendly contracts like larkin raymond n seider did
2) even with tavares took a team friendly deal with the leafs he has still underperformed his contract (1mil or 2 Imo)
3) related to 1)good luck getting decent rfa contracts in future
4) also related to 1) core players will make drw pay out the nose when contracts up
5) IMO hone what you got, sign ufa players who wanna b here to team friendly contracts, whether they 4th liners to superstars or players late in careers wanting to win
6) longevity and patience soundest bet on trying to make a winner (SY obv alrdy knows that)

One of the key things overlooked in all the "Yzerman Sucks" threads is the salary structure he was working on. Larkin, Raymond and Seider contracts all great /fair deals that sets the tone going forward.
That doesn't mean no one will make more than Larkin at some point, but cap/salary discipline has been established. This will give the flexibility to make a major signing for the right player who fills the right role at the right time or make a trade for a big contract.
But to just go around looking for ways to spend the new cap money would be foolish.

wouldnt be 100% against signing marner or rantanen relative to what bring compared to detroits core player (also considering they are Ufas) but no way either would sign when other teams probably will be offering 13x7 at a minimum

A lot of the criticism in this thread has been people calling the Wings as a mid team when they are playing to they best, saying they don't have the elite pieces to be a contender and don't have the ways to get them.
So a mid team being in a wildcard spot isn't super surprising.
A big thing you gotta consider when chasing big name UFAs is that they destroy an internal cap.
It seems pretty evident that the hold up with Seider, and the reason he didn't get an 8th year, was because they weren't going to let him make more than Larkin's $8.7M.
It's hard to tell the next group of guys "You don't get to make more than X" when you throw $12.5M at a Rantanen or a Marner. Not to mention it probably pisses off a guy like Seider who was likely told you can't make more than Larkin did, but then you turn around and give some outsider $4M/year more.
... All this aside from the fact that I think giving a UFA winger $12.5M/year is stupid in the first place lol.

We were bad and riding very high sh% during our streak last year. It was nice but it wasn’t close to what we’re seeing now, last few games notwithstanding.
Lalonde was bad from start to finish lol
They have the elite pieces. What they don’t have is a supporting cast.
