The team just never finished quite bad enough to ever draft truly elite young talent, the kind who can actually drive a team to the playoffs. Ending up with a group of good, but not star level talent just isn't enough.

Wings fans have also overestimated just how many of their prospects would reach their ceilings (few players ever truly do).

Yzerman is a decent GM, but not a miracle worker.

And the team has been stuck in a rough division with four teams consistently better than the bottom 4.

Selling Holland's young assets turned into ASP, Debrincat, Cossa, and Buchelnikov. It's shocking how little value Yzerman has brought in.

Yzerman did alright with picking players with extremely high NHLe and overagers but terribly otherwise, now he's not even picking players with high NHLe.

Failing to see how turning Tyler Bertuzzi, who didn't want to resign, into Debrincat, was a bad move. And considering how Cossa and Buchelnikov are developing, I'll take that over Mantha's Jekyll and Hyde effort level on a shitty team.

They should be, they missed the playoffs 6 times since then, yet the closest thing Yzerman got to an extra asset was a 2nd to take Staal when he also dumped Walman with a 2nd later on. In a best case scenario Larkin will be 29 before any of Yzerman's picks after #8 make the team, he'll probably be 29 before any pick after #6 score 30 points.

What they were ranked and what they turned out to be are completely different and is completely irrelevant to today.

He's been pretty average. Looks alot like a Holland managed team really. Slow build. Very conservative approach. No big moves. Just adding free agents and slow playing prospects.

If Yzerman was a true hockey genius he probably would have identified a young underappreciated guy in a other org and brought him in by now.

So far it's just add vets and sitting on hands. That's Holland team building.

Magic Beans is nearly PPG in the SHL as a 19 year old defenseman. Hronek was going to demand a fat contract while never playing ahead of Seider again.

Gotcha, thanks for clarification, it was confusing since the two were fuzed together. I don't take issue with an 05-born Mid-1st round pick Defenseman in ASP continuing into SHL at the moment. They may even consider giving him half to a full season in Grand Rapids next year. I just take issue with keeping players down simply for the sake of keeping them down to burn through the longest possible period to keep them exempt from Waivers. Fine for guys that are just 4th liners but players with Top 9/Middle 3 ability shouldn't be artificially kept down.

The "Can't crack the roster" comment wasn't really directed toward you, it was just fresh in the mind. It's a rather common criticism. I sometimes get frustrated with Detroit "Deferring to the veteran". Edvinsson was ready well ahead of when he was brought up. Kasper was sent down to start the year and that was very quickly corrected. But I do think Detroit generally does a good job holding off on kids to make sure they're well rounded before exposing them to the NHL and it's not really fair to say a team has failed to draft well because they didn't call their kids up ASAP.
