Detroit Redwings Downfall

It requires some shrewd trading to turn into an elite team. Drafting is somewhat of a crapshoot, just sitting on draft capital and expecting an elite team to emerge is never gonna work. Look at how many incredible trades Florida made to turn into the best team in the league. If they just sat on the players they drafted they would have never won. Yzerman just signs crappy players and sits there for years waiting for his drafts. Crappy players and contracts just block any meaningful trades that could have been made. Just a big failure all around.
Exactly like Ron Francis the GM.

These types only make a trade that is very clearly in their favor.

The Red Wings downfall into perpetual mediocrity is crazy.

Goaltending sucks, they have 1/3rd of an NHL defensive corps, their forward depth sucks to compound that their best player is Lucas Raymond.

They need their decent prospects like Sandin/Augistine and Cossa to pan out and to get a Panarin or Rantanen to start to see progress. A lot needs to go right here.

Wings lack stable goaltending and a big Offensive threat up front. Have to wait on the goalies. UFA typically only 1 guy and they will pick a good team that has an opening.
MI produces NHLers, but is there a talented UFA forward that wants to go home?

Potentially Kyle Connor but doubt he leaves WPG.

2023 I would have thought that was a legit possibility. But with how the jets have turned it around I think he stays so long as the team can compete. He is eligible to extend in July so should know quickly.

So I see his contract ends in 2026 which would mean he can be re-signed this July. So what does his next contract look like?
I'd sign long and early! He does seem to be everything the Wing's fans have described. The perfect ASP or Seider partner who can carry his own line without an elite D or potential elite D.

I did this for a Pasta thread but couldn't help notice Larkin is top 5 in 2025 so far!

They have either been unlucky or bad at drafting
Yeah. Since the 2017 draft, Detroit has used 6 high picks (one #15, rest were top 10) to take a forward. If Raymond ends up the only top line forward out of that group, the rebuild is going to have a tough time succeeding.

Zadina already busted and Rasmussen is a bottom 6 guy. It's too early to say what's going to happen with Kasper, Danielson and MBN, but as of now I'm not really seeing high end offense in any of them. Maybe they did hit with Buchelnikov though.

Defense and goaltending seems to be coming along good, but I think they have to go all out on Marner or something.

All in all, lets put in context that Detroit have the hardest post Christmas schedule of any team.
They just completely blew the first half of the season against much weaker opposition.

The offence is start to show with Kasper now that hes playing on the top line instead of centering a bottom 6 line. Hes got something like 10 points his last 10 games now. One thing about Kasper though is that with everything else he does at a high level already, if you can get him to become a 70 point guy... With the way Detroits back end is being built, hes still top line center you can win with I think. His habits for a guy his age are top notch
