Or if you know other teams aren't high on them, decided not to pick them or don't know much about them, you wait to pick them with a lower pick and pick other guys you also want with higher picks.

The other half people forget to acknowledge is player development. And honestly, that may be bigger than "Half".

I find it easier to believe that an organization like Dallas is just very good at knowing how to develop players than to believe that they're consistently smarter than 31 other teams in seeing a potential star outside the Top 20 picks.

Kinda like how (And this is purely my opinion) Detroit's draftees seem to develop a lot better in Europe than they do in North America. When all is said and done, Kronwall's contributions to the team in player development may end up being greater than his career as a player. He's had a hand in developing Seider, Edvinsson, and ASP.

I see we have reached the critiquing practice stage of the Yzerman Triggers HF Boards threads.

To think how naive it was for me to think the peak was declaring a top prospect a bust after his first period of NHL play.

God only knows what further depths this thread can reach.

In the mean time Happy New New Year all, and for those of you who know who you are - for the love of god go touch some grass (or snow depending where you are) in 2025.

You honestly going to believe any good GM won't know any 10-15 prospect before the draft? GM often go see prospect play live. Especially team drafting in the top 10. They will trust the scout for any player drafted from second round to seven.
That’s cool. It’s also not what he said at all.

He said any pics outside of the top 10 are just decided by scouts.

I’m waiting for the references of any single GM saying they solely chose a pick in the top 10 and everything else is decided by scouts.

Still waiting….

Teams can also get a big rep off what ms also a large degree of luck. For Dallas Hintz/Robertson may as well be Colorado's Drury/Hejduk from the 90's, but the Avs didn't actually have any magic formula to keep doing it. Same with that era's Detroit and their no name player drafted in the last round who becomes a star routine.

Development is also true, in the same way Nashville for years have developed defensemen or checking/defensive forwards. Whether they drafted them themselves or got them elsewhere, they always had a steady production of defensemen coming and always got checking/defensive forwards coming.

What's going on in Detroit :slaugh:

What’s going on Detroit is that Lalonde was a truly horrific coach and people here kept saying “no your roster is just a bottom 5 roster” and calling Wings fans stupid. They have been coached by a buffoon for years. McLellan is bringing back basics and actually implementing a system.

Ive never heard a GM who says he makes all of the picks and dont utilize his scout at all.

only difference being yzerman already built a dynasty in tbay and just shot the lights out 3 drafts in a row seiderraymondedvinsson but of course to troll he dont know what hes doing

Not that teams don't f*** it up, but hitting at the very top of the draft is like the bare minimum of what should be expected.

31 picks across those three drafts, 11 of which were in the first 2 rounds, and while there’s still promising prospects to come so far they’ve got three NHLers out of it.

did you even read what i said ? i said he nailed 3 top pix , i didnt say a word about one other prospect but you did in your troll attempt /

You said “shot the lights out 3 drafts in a row”. You’re right, how could anyone possibly interpret that as meaning the entire draft…

If you want to take my comment as trolling, that’s your prerogative.

Of course they don’t make all the picks themselves.

But there’s two posters in here who are saying the GM solely picks players chosen inside the top 10 and everything else is on the scouts.

I’m waiting for any kind of proof of this.

It’s been 3 days now

Just plain wrong. They were almost in the playoffs last year without having any business of being there.
