While acknowledging that the 2nd is likely to yield someone less talented than Kapanen, as a Wings fan I don’t see the point of this trade. We could make a Kapanen-level addition in free agency if we wanted to. He’s not a core player, so age isn’t much of a benefit there. The value seems fair though.

What is going on with Kapanen? He was an equal replacement for Nylander in Toronto, he started off well in Pitt, then what?

Kapanen had a horrendous 6 week stretch but has recently rounded back into form somewhat. He's a ~45 point guy that had a bad stretch this year, that's about it.

I think a late 2nd for Kapanen is a bit low, but the difference between "low" and "fair" in my eyes is like adding a 3rd on top of it. If the Penguins need cap space to retain Rakell and Rust, I'd make this move. Otherwise, I'd rather just keep Kapanen.

When in the world???
Here’s a sample for you from an old post I made, which is why I’m asking what happened to Kapanen:

Kapanen was on pace for 57 points in the Leafs top 6 while Nylander and Dubas were in the negotiation room. Nylander was a 61 point player in the Leafs top 6 not really better.

After Kapanen was traded:

Kapenen:
47GP, 37 points
64pts/82gp
26 5vs5 points
2.48 p/60
$3,200,000 AAV

Nylander:
59GP, 48 points
66pts/82gp
29 5vs5 points
2.19 p/60
$6,962,366 AAV

I think Detroit needs a 2C much more than a 3rd line winger that plays zero PK and minimal (8th amongst Pitt forwards) PP.

Stats absolutely do not give the full picture here, Kapanen is a completely different styled player and has at no point been near as good as Willy. Plays would die on his stick so frequently when he played with Matthews

He's a good 3rd liner imo but there's a reason he got less than half of Nylander's AAV

Don’t think Wings will really have room for another top 9 W, at least a mediocre one. Bert, Raymond, Vrana, Zadina, Berggren, Fabbri, Sundqvist and a kid like Soderblom possibly pushing his way into lineup at some point as well.

Make more sense to just sign a UFA W for added depth if they want rather than give up a 2nd for one.

I would potentially do it, but this is contingent on things like Gagner & Rowney not being re-signed, Soderblom needing a full season or more in the AHL, and (a) guy(s) like Bertuzzi, Suter, Erne being traded away.

Bertuzzi - Larkin - Raymond
Vrana - Copp? - Kapanen
Fabbri - Veleno - Zadina/ Berggren
Rasmussen - Stephens - Sundqvist

There's no Zadina/Berggren. They're not benching one of them so they can trade a 2nd for Kap unless maybe they're fully expecting Bergy to spend another year in GR which seems doubtful

Agreed, that is a sticky situation in my mind, I am just thinking about maximizing value because I think getting Kap for a late 2nd at this stage of his career could end up being advantageous, he is only slightly removed from scoring 30 points in 40 games. But I agree with you, if both Zadina and Berggren need a roster spot, it makes sense to stick with those guys and not move assets out in a deal like this.

Perhaps at the draft. Unless Kapanen has an excellent playoffs which is unlikely he will probably be dealt. The zucker injury might force the pens to hold on to him longer than needed

You mean Det? I wouldn't spend an asset on Kapanen right now let alone 3 assets. He does nothing for us, as he isn't better than the other wingers we already have and doesn't fill a need.
I thought he could skate and carry the puck over the blueline and maybe give the Wings a few more points.

I’d rather dump one of our mediocre dmen that make more than Kap. I’m sure you could get a late round pick for Pettersson. Our defense is insanely overpriced.

Red Wings have plenty of wingers plus a few winger prospects who can do that. There is no need to trade actual assets to get something that isnt a strong need.

Wings need a center and top-4 LDs.

He was just as productive if not more.
