At the end of the day, Dreger said there was no market for Vanek. So I expected to lose him in the offseason for nothing. Wings fans should be stoked for a 3rd, especially if it turns into Arizona's (which should be 62-65th overall).

Will Holland learn to stop signing 30+ year olds?

Of course not. He'll bring Vanek back for 3+ years in July.

It wasn't the best return, but it's hard to be upset about getting something back for a guy doing very little long term good for a pretty bad team.

Why not? Vanek developed a bad reputation after his last rental (to Montreal), where it looked as though he was playing not to get hurt as an impending UFA. He's slow, not committed to fundamentals ... he's a mercenary who doesn't score enough. Not ingredients any team looking to win in the playoffs would want to add.

I guess I would have wanted Ottawa to get him to ensure we get to the playoffs. We could use some scoring, especially on the PP and he's on a 65 point pace.

I dunno what to say. At that price, if he blows in the playoffs, then you can sit him in the pressbox and call it a day.

Well Detroit - when nobody wants him you end up taking what you can get.

It's not a horrible deal if it was the only deal. You're not making the playoff's and Vanek doesn't help you at all long term....so I don't see any reason to be all that upset.

FLA - this really doesn't do much for them. Vanek while skilled isn't an impact player. You added a body that has as good of a chance to hurt your playoffs as he does help them.

At least Detroit lost a productive forward for the rest of the season. Addition by subtraction for lottery odds. What are 4 3rd round picks worth

Wish the Rangers did this. Or at least used McIlrath for Smith.

Reminds me of Parenteau last year. Player putting up decent numbers on a poor team. Everyone thought a first, then a second, then nothing at all.

At least you guys got something. Good deal for both.

Wait, so if Florida misses the playoffs all they gave up was McIlrath?
