I guess I would have wanted Ottawa to get him to ensure we get to the playoffs. We could use some scoring, especially on the PP and he's on a 65 point pace.

I dunno what to say. At that price, if he blows in the playoffs, then you can sit him in the pressbox and call it a day.

Yeah, and that's why Florida got him, I'm sure: just to make the playoffs.

I don't see Vanek as a fit for Ottawa at all. Even just for the regular season.

Lol, wow what a return for smith! Holland is a genius, now he is an idiot... Vanek has a bad rep, older player with some injury issues. Which could end up being the first pick in the 3rd round...

Is the value really that different if the cup winner gave us a 2nd??

It is what it is... A late 2nd is what a lot of people expected, Florida makes playoffs thats what we got.

Pants.
Vanek prepares for the postseason by pinning his name and address to his jersey. It's pretty well known at this point. I don't think it's a bad deal from either end.

I don't get what people on this site expected. Vanek was PPG in 2012-2013//2013-2014 (still in his prime) and fetched a 2nd + average prospect (Collberg, who was trending downwards) from MTL at the trade deadline.

You expected him to get more than that when he's older, his reputation has gone downhill and he recently just got bought out? Laughable, use your heads.

I'm no Vanek fan but that's a crap return for someone who's been pretty productive this year. Then again his playoff performances have been abysmal.

Based off of other returns so far, I think a lot of Wings fans expected a 2nd + a really solid prospect. Not a 3rd + a garbage player. But, at least they got something for Vanek. That's what is important overall. He's going to be good for Florida.

I guess our scouts see something in Mcllrath? Chara didn't break out until his 5th or 6th season iirc, don't think Dylan will touch Chara's career but if nothing else, at least he has size.

He's producing at a similar clip to Eaves who is only a year younger and has much better playoff production than Eaves. So getting much less than Eaves is a surprise.

Given the return a younger Vanek got last time, I'm satisfied with this return. We weren't going to get more.

I don't think that comparable works. Vanek was traded to MTL after it was determined that the Islanders overplayed their hand and waited too long. It was in the last few minutes before the deadline hit.

Eaves is much more defensively responsible and he doesn't have Vanek's "lazy" reputation. Like i said in previous threads, GM's don't pay premiums for players like Vanek.

This is pretty bad. No lose situation for FLA. Say what you want about Vanek, and I've said plenty, but he has top line offensive talent.

What kind of topsy turvy world are we living in when Brendan Smith goes for a 2nd and a 3rd, and Vanek, @50% retained goes for a 3rd and a career AHLer?

Congrats Panthers fans, you just got yourself a helluva player dirt cheap.

Every other GM, WTH were you thinking?

Ask any Wings fan is Vanek has been lazy this season. He's playing with wounded pride, and for his last big contract. He has been hungry and one of our best players.

You think he could get back to 55-60pts playing with Huberdeau and Barkov because I view him as more of a Jokinen replacement on the 2nd line than a Jagr replacement on the 1st line.

Curious if our management view him as a pure rental or he may get a Burrows like extension.

Wow how awful, well it makes sense if no one expected Vanek to perform in the playoffs then the only market were teams that thought he could help the remainder of the regular season.

A career AHL defenseman and likely a middling third. Pretty much zero return.

Except you're completely ignoring how the market changes from year to year. What players are available, what teams needs are, how many teams are buyers, etc.

These trade deadlines don't occur in a vacuum.
