I thought he was going to return a 1st?

Good deal for Florida. McIlrath isn't consistent enough to be a NHL defenseman so he has little to no value

No way. A contender wouldn't give a late second for him? He doesn't have much cap hit left and would be a great fit for contenders close to the ceiling. Terrible return if it's just a third.

No because he sucks in playoffs.

But the Panthers are chasing a playoff spot so it's a good trade for them.

Vanek only got a 2nd and a bust prospect in Sebastian Collberg the last time he was traded at the deadline, then proceeded to disappear in the playoffs. Contending teams clearly don't value him highly.

I'm surprised they weren't able to get more than what the Hurricanes got for Stalberg, though, especially with salary retention. McIlrath is a warm body who has cleared waivers twice this season.

I thought, at most, Vanek would land a 2nd.

But his reputation is apparently that bad and needs to be rebuilt. I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to Detroit next year as he did well.
