Not crippling but an overpay, no?

If you check the Darren Helm contract value thread that's on the front page, the overwhelming majority of people were saying between 3.5-4 million per for 5 years. This isn't surprising but it is a bit of an overpay for a 3rd line center.

Not crippling but an overpay, no?

No one contract is ever crippling. But Helm is just the newest bad contract to go along with Ericsson, Abdelkader, Zetterberg, Franzen, Howard...

Holland has lost it. He's getting close to ruining his legacy at this point.

Did you ever read that Illitch was pushing for Holland to take a presidents role in the front office so Yzerman could be the GM..and Holland turned it down.

FFS.

If that is true, then what the hell. When your boss, and the owner is the boss, makes a "suggestion", it's not really a suggestion; rather, it is an order. And if Holland says no, then Illitch thanks him for his service and shows him the door. Loyalty only goes so far in business, and this is a business. Performance matters, and when you get consistently mediocre performance, change is necessary. Even vital.

Who's better Shaw or Helm?

Shaw has a 39 point season under his belt and isn't even 25 yet.

Helm is 30, injury prone, and has never broken 35 points despite getting PP time and spending a ton of time on Datsyuk's wing the past two years.

Shaw's deal is much, much better.

We're going to do this on basically every contract signed today aren't we?

God help us all.

Not really, the Ekblad deal while pricey I think is a great move. You are basically locking up a first pairing RHD during the prime of his career. Also while 7.5 is a tad high right now it will look like a ateal in a year or two given his growth and the increase in the cap.

Agreed that there will be a lot of crappy deals but when the new CBA is negotiated I am sure the teams will be allowed to buy one or two contracts out without any cap consequences.

This by the way is a bad deal, not terrible but not great. To much AAV and too long.

Without Lidstrom Datsyuk and Babcock, DRW looking pretty average these days.

Wonder what he might give Radulov, considering he appears to want 7 a year over atleast 2 to not stay in the KHL.

Helm and Abdelkader, who are both about to be on the wrong side of 30, make about as much Stamkos.

Helm and Abdelkader, especially in their 30s, won't be providing that much more replacement value over kids that could be drafted and developed to fill their roles.

Holy ****. With Dreger calling this a discount I'm afraid of the other deals we'll see today.

I don't understand why give a 29 year old grinder this much term . Darren Helm never scored 20 goal or had 40 points. There's no upside left anymore that kind of production is easily replaceable imho . You don't need to lock him up that long.

Holland sees that what Detroit has now doesn't work, best player retires, promises changes are coming...

Solution: sign the exact same players he had last year to ridiculous contracts, changes nothing.

He's got to go.

C'mon people. Dredger is right - it's not an overpayment. By the end of today this will seem like a thrifty, prudent deal.

Solid move by the Wings, as usual.
