Definitely different situations. I’m just being optimistic but im thinking $9mil AAV is the minimum for him on a long term deal
But even if you pay Dobson 9 mill, you still did better than Yzerman did on seider.

4x3+9x4=48 mill for 7 years post ELC on dobson
8.55x7=60 mill for 7 years post ELC on seider

Most GMs would be fired after 5 years in charge and not one playoff berth.
Circumstances matter in most things in life…

I always enjoy the outside fanbases take on this. Yzerman is still very safe in large part because of the two guys he just locked in. The Ilitch family is pretty loyal to their management with both franchises they own.

I mean the difference between Seider and Dobson on their ELC years is pretty stark...

Year one and two aren't close. Three is where Dobson took off and even then he wasn't nearly as relied on defensively.

That's going to be a great deal the second half of the contract if not sooner.

It's a great deal now, honestly.

They purposely nerfed his PP time signing Ghost and then gave him absurd assignments.

He may still get absurd assignments but hopefully Edvinsson can take some of the load... He's paired with Petry though.

I think every team in the league would have gladly given out this contract...

Seider should fire his agent
Outside of opting for a bridge deal, hoping to cash in even more in a few years, Seider isn't getting more than what he got here on a longterm deal. He's got a load of potential but really hasn't done anything to prove he's worth 10+, even though he's being paid like a top 10 defenseman already (and half of the 10 top highest paid defensemen are overpaid – see Doughty, Nurse, Werenski, Jones, etc.). This is a fair deal for both sides that has the potential to be very good for the Wings, if Seider improves, but it's not some sort of highway robbery.

A hot rookie year followed by a deep cliff brought on by usage he couldn't handle and rough defensive metrics…but there’s offensive luck and PP?

Man…Ristolainen’s are getting expensive.

Yikes. There was no cliff, what a dumb comment!

Most GMs would be fired after 5 years in charge and not one playoff berth.

No most GMs would not be fired after taking over a dumpster fire and no playoffs or #1-3 overall draft picks during that time.

"Being paid like he's a top 10 defenseman already"... Except he's not in the top 10 highest paid and he's even lower when you consider cap percentage...

No pre arb RFA dman has ever even surpassed 9 mill, let alone 10. Edit: Reigning Norris winner Adam Fox got 9.5
