And to think he was a throw-in for Leddy last year. They still have the Blues 2nd and Sundqvist from that deal.
Not so much, really. SY said at the time of the trade that he'd been watching Walman since he was at Providence. Steve thought there was some upside in his game, and it looks like he might be right.

Very happy for Jake. It took a few years longer than I expected but glad he’s finally becoming the player I thought he would when I saw him in college.

He seems to have found the perfect spot next to Seider. I like what Yzerman is doing there. As long as he doesn’t lose Larkin, they’re looking real good there in DET in a year or two.

$3.4Mx3 for zero track record.
I've seen enough coverage issues from Walman to warrant.

Also, with Maatta signed, we have 3 LD signed for next season.
I wouldn't mind breaking in Edvinsson next year.
This is as simple as dumping Chiarot, whether trade or buyout.

I thought once they resigned Maatta, they'd let Walman walk. I didn't anticipate him getting this kind of deal on the strength of 40 games, but they've been 40 really good games. New style defensive defenseman with great skating and high compete. 30 point upside isn't unreasonable. They really like him in all situations. The corner he turned this season was being tidy in his own zone and reliable enough to play with the minutes eaters at even strength. I don't think this deal can go "bad" in the traditional sense. It's a little higher because Walman is a little older with less team control, but this is around the going rate for a 4th or 5th. Interesting somewhat because he really picked himself up off the mat starting the year injured and battling back not only into the lineup, but into 20 minutes per night.
