Seems crazy on the surface, but this is Carolina sticking to what they believe for better or for worse. They believe goaltending is not worth paying for and they weren't willing to pay his arbitration award just for the sake of not losing him.

They’re truly the Patriots of the NHL. If you don’t slot in at exactly the price tag that they’re looking for, they’ll happily trade you a year too early instead of a year too late.
