Gardner McKay
RIP, Jimmy.
Wow. People really do need a scapegoat. Brassard has played 4 games here and he is already the new whipping boy for some people because of their perception of him from his time with another team.
Brassard is not soft at all. He goes into the dirty areas of the ice to battle for pucks. He just isn't overly large so he isn't all that successful along the boards. I am not sure where you get "soft" from.
I posted a video somewhere in this thread, the announcers discuss Brassard's lack of toughness after he ended up in a fight. He spent quite some time on the CBJ injury list after trying to play physical. Watch it and you'll know what I mean.
But I wish him all the best as a Ranger, hopefully his hockey skills will help us.
Not willing to engage in physical battles because of a previous injury is a good excuse. Still an excuse though.
Hes been a soft perimeter type player since his shoulder injury. Im not saying thats a bad thing. Not everyone has to be a banger on the roster. But dont go saying hes not a soft player just because hes Ranger property now.
That's the thing, though - based solely on his 4 games here I would NOT call him a perimeter player. He has been more than willing to go into the dirty areas. He just isn't that effective when he engages there. That's why I drew the distinction between unwilling (which is how I view soft) to hit, battle along the walls, etc. and willing, but not possessing much aptitude at it.

Brad Richards has been soft his whole career. Doesnt mean hes wasnt a very very good player until this season.
In his 4 games so far as a Ranger I've seen him in the corners and in front of the net...don't know what else you want from the kid.
Its not about what I want from this 26 year old "kid."
Its about this fanbase's misguided hope that a player will change his stripes after several years in the NHL when he comes to the Rangers.
I'm not a fan of his game at all. I don't think he's as good defensively as people are making him out to be. Last game was pretty bad. He's never been a defensive player, so I'm not sure where this claim of good defensive play is coming from. He is a weak, tweener that gets muscled off the puck easily and has spurts of offensive creativity leaving you with exciting, followed by stretches of disappointment. We should have gotten Foligno, Anisimov or Dubinsky in return, but we can see why JD is a hell of an executive.
serious question, who on this team are you a fan of?
so you like three non-goaltenders?Lots. Hagelin MDZ Stepan Lundqvist Biron.
Fair enough. Ill give you that willing and ineffective is better than completely unwilling to get your nose dirty.
Ive also come to the realization that this fanbase will never ever be happy with their 3rd line center anyway.
You said he was soft, soft players don't go to the front of the net...never really saw him play before he got here, and frankly I don't know how many people who aren't CBJ fans have...so far he's done all the right things.
It's ironic that the biggest criticisms are coming from the biggest Gabby fans, because the primary topics of criticism are areas in which Gabby was as bad or (significantly) worse.
Yup. Brassard has been fantastic in that role so far.
(And again, you can't take him alone - he was one of 4 pieces that came back for Gabby.)
Soft players go to the net. They just look to avoid contact when they get there.
I dont mean for my description of Brassard to automatically mean hes a worthless player or anything like that. A lot of good players have been soft.
If he can add some offensive creativity to the 3rd line and be responsible defensively, I dont care if he doesnt throw a check his entire time here.
To say we know what we have with Brassard after four games, one way or the other, is crazy.
Unless your going to the net against the Rangers, the probability of getting drilled is extremely high. Is he going to stand if front of the goalie to screen him, probably not but that's not his game...as JD used to say you have to let your plumbers plumb and dancers dance.
If you want Brassaard to be Callahan you are guaranteed to be disappointed.
I think its pretty clear thats not what I want, nor expect.
....Torts on the other hand....
I think its crazy that you think its crazy.
Hes played over 300 NHL games before coming to the Rangers. Hes 25 years old. To totally wipe the slate clean when discussing him as a player is absurd.
I haven't had the time to read some of the posts in this thread so sorry if this has been said a lot, what role was Brass playing in Columbus? 1C, 2C, 3C..?
This went unanswered soo![]()
