Step is now on pace for 71 points over 82 games. He's in the tied for 28th in scoring, for 9th in +/- and for 14th in GWG. There are 90 first liners, and his production has him among in the top third of first liners.

Among the centers, he's #15 in scoring, #5 in +/- and tied for #7 in GWG.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have our first line center.

Can he do this over a full season, though?

I don't WANT to be that guy, and I fully believe Steps has taken the step to first liner...but in a real season he'd have to do this for another 40 games.

One half-season does not make him a 1C. Sorry he needs to do with over 82 games and more than one year.

the thing is, he may havent proved hes a number 1c yet.. but at this point in time we know hes a solid 2way 2c.. and we've known that since he came into the league.. 45p and then 51 and then this year he would be on pace for 70ps over 82gs... hes deff a solid number 2c.. honestly if brass could bring his level to steps production, i think hes more skilled, may not have the hockey iq, but we could have 2-2c centers and that would be amazing for us, and good bye brad.. then just focus on scoring wingers, kreider live to half the hype an be min a 30g scorer.. and we'll be mint long term!! especially with our young d that we have!!

People keep saying "can he get 70 in an 82 game season?". Well he's only on pace for 70 because he had a pretty slow start. Why isn't it possible that in the 2nd half of the season he was around PPG like he's been for a while and finished with more than 70 points?/

Meh. 40 games from a skater are actually pretty telling (unlike 40, or even 80 from a goalie)

I agree to an extent, but they're not telling enough to definitively believe Steps has blossomed into a 1C.

If he comes back next year and puts up 70+ points then yes, I think he has proven himself. But I can't use a ******** half season to make any claims about any player in the league.

Steps has really elevated his game. If he can remain consistent he would be the prototypical "first line center" this team has been looking for for such a long time. I'll wait to see if he keeps it going in the playoffs and through next year before I pass judgement upon his status as a first liner, but as of right now he is certainly playing the part for this team.

I understand where you are coming from. But Derek is now top 11 of all centers in points. He's in the top 30 of all forwards in points. Even if he slips a bit he's still a 1C. This year he is not only a 1C but he is an Elite 1C. Now, I don't know if he will stay at that pace next year. But for right now he is.

Not to mention, he's a +22. He plays the PK and is often one of our best defensive players. His vision and hockey IQ is elite.

I'm not sure he's going to continue at this pace, but even if he doesn't he's still a 1C.

He's also only 22 years old.

On pace for 73 points over 82 games. Has 35 points in the last 34 games.

Does Stepan get a long term deal?

I know he has no arbitration rights, does Sather sign him to a long term deal or not. Someone should let Glen know that this is getting expensive. Any thoughts......................

Depends what your definition of long-term is. I have no problem with a 4-5 year deal, but anything beyond that starts to get dicey.

A good question. Idk to be honest. Part of me says yes part of me says no..but I'll go with yes,6 yrs @ 4 mill per

Dubinsky had a great season, held out and got a contract then faltered

I don't know how we could even begin to have this discussion unless somebody is in the know on what Stepan's agent is looking for and/or what the Rangers are thinking of offering. Maybe Stepan wants to stay here forever and takes a discount for a 6-year deal. Maybe he plans on pulling an O'Reilly. Who knows. Historically, the Rangers have stuck to two-year deals for RFA's, but not in every case (like Staal). What management decides to offer will be dictated largely by what Stepan's demands are. And we don't know what they are.

Dubinsky had a great season, held out and got a contract then faltered

after he signed he had it rough, but whos to say if he was here he wouldnt have bounced back... a ranger fan would be crazy to not want this guy back.. but to be honest Stepan is way more consistent then dubi.. has proved so much more in his short career..

45pts rookie yr
51pts 2nd year
40pts in 45 games..

hes consistent and will only get better.. hes not just a one dimentional player but a center thats 2way..

id lock him up long term 5yrs 4m/yr AAV

Mcd 5yr 3.975m AAV (staals cap hit)

hags id lock up to like a K. Okposo deal 2.8m AAV for 4yrs

I'd give him 4 years. Playing with Nash has really helped this kid.

i'd prefer to give him 2 years and see if he can replicate or improve on his performance this year before i give him a long term contract. half a season playing at a 1C level isnt enough for me to give out big money and years.

Dubinsky held out after his ELC. He missed 2 or 3 days of training camp and then caved and signed a 2 year deal. He improved upon his numbers in each of the next 2 years. It wasn't until after he signed long term that his numbers went down.

The only way we can afford more than 2 years for Stepan is if McD only gets 2 years, Clowe isn't re-signed, or Richards is bought out. McD is arbitration eligible, so there will be more pressure to sign him to a longer term deal. Richards has played better of late and I expect the Rangers will wait until 2014 to buy him out. That leaves Clowe as the odd man out.

But I still think Stepan will get a 2 year deal.

Stepan has been improving steadily every year. I still think his skating keeps him from being Elite. But he is most definitely a 1C by NYR standards and an outstanding 2C by league standards which is pretty damn great when you have someone like Nash on his line. He is definitely the best Ranger center I've seen since Nylander for certain. BR one year is too small a sample size to qualify him. And he's only 22. I don't know how much he can improve his skating but if he does he will definitely be an elite center.

I know you guys aren't necessarily comparing Dubi and Stepan, but just because Dubi fell off a cliff doesn't mean it'll happen to Stepan. Dubi does a few things better than Stepan. He's a better skater, better stickhandler. Stepan however already has a better shot and his brain is on another planet from Dubi. The latter will keep him from slumping as hard as Dubi IMO (at least as long as he's young). I also get the impression that Stepan is a harder worker (meaning he works harder to improve his game).

The Rangers don't have the space for a long term deal for Derek. Stepan's agent will want $4M per for a long term deal. The Rangers don't have that room with a $64.3M cap. The cap will go up by 15-16 with the new Canadian TV dollars. It could go up for 14-15. Stepan signs a 2 year bridge deal. 13-14 and 14-15.
