Booed Ranger blue do you think Stepan cares about how much people love him on the HF boards or a extra million in his pockets?? I bet I know the answer..

Most players care what the fans think of them even if it is only on a superficial level. If organizations and players didn't care what people think do you think they would do charity work and community crap in their spare time?

How many players historically hold out like RoR to the point their team considers trading them?

Dont really know what that question has to do with the discussion - but we know you'll love him no matter what.

5 points in his last 5 games.

Your Drury comparison is simply wrong.

I've said it before and ill say it again. The denial in regards to Richards amongst our fanbase is alarming.

Picking up your game to the level of lackluster top 6 center =\ refinding your game.

The comparison was to Chris Drury whose game absolutely fell off a cliff after his second season.

Im not denying that he looks a step or two slow and its a deep concern, but Drury? Please

Drurys last season with Buffalo: 69 points
1st with the Rangers: 58
2nd with the Rangers: 56

Richards last season with Dallas: 77 points (in 72 games)
1st with the Rangers: 66 points
2nd with the Rangers: On pace for 52 points

And Drury was a hell of a lot better defensively and served as our captain.

How many times do I need to repeat this statline for people in denial to realize?

And it's only going to get worse. Well until next summer at least when he gets his ass bought out. Speaking of being bought out, another suggestion that was alien to 90 percent of this fanbase 3 months ago, yet is now practically inevitable to most.

Richards had something close to 70 points last season, but comparing the way Richards played last year, except for March, and Stepan most of this season is night and day.

Step has been a player on that point pace while being very good defensively. Its one of the reasons why he has such a fantastic +/- this year. If Richards was playing anywhere close to the level that Stepan is as a 2 way player we'd be challenging pittsburgh for best in the east.

I'm not sure if all that ground can be made up with just another Stepan.

I do believe it could.

This team is very good defensively. They are top-5 in the league in that facet. We have 1 line that scores on a nearly game to game basis. If we had another line that was a scoring threat, game in and game out, we would be winning a ton of these 1 goal, 2 goal games that we lost, IMO.

This offensive core hasn't lived up to expectations. Nash has, Stepan has exceeded his. Everyone else? Disappointment. If we had even 2 lines that could score, we'd be so much better off - but we don't. We only have 1.

I'm not saying that Stepan will reach his level, but his progression has been remarkably similar to Claude Giroux's.

Both broke into the league as 20 year olds, so let's compare their first three seasons in the league:

Code:
PPG 20	21	22
Stepan	0,55	0,62	0,85
Giroux	0,64	0,57	0,93

GVT/82	20	21	22
Stepan	7,0	11,0	26,8
Giroux	10,7	8,1	17,3

OGVT/82	20	21	22
Stepan	5,3	6,1	12,3
Giroux 5,3	13,9

DGVT/82	20	21	22
Stepan	3,1	4,9	13,8
Giroux 1,6	4,2

Read about GVT here, or in a more reader-friendly way here.

Two seasons acclimatising themselves to the NHL while performing like decent 2C's and then breaking out year three. Giroux had a slight edge offensively, Stepan a big edge defensively.

Stepan's GVT is likely to cool off a bit, especially his DGVT. All forms of GVT is cumulative like points and Kopitar led all forwards with 6.9 in 82 games while Stepan has 6.4 in 38 (The GVT table is only updated once per week). But his season is very impressive nevertheless, 28th most valuable player in the league through 38 games (Lundqvist is #1, Nash #21).

This is exactly the comparison I was going to make. Very similar players.

Giroux signed prior to the 2011-12 season. The cap that year was 64.3 mil, which is also what it will be next year, so no inflation. Giroux got a 3 year deal:

Year 1: 2.75
Year 2: 3.5
Year 3: 5

So if Stepan gets similar money, but only 2 years, which is what Slats normally does, he will get a total of 6.25 mil, which would be a 3.125 mil cap hit. Knowing Sather, he'll come in a little under that.

Year 1: 2.5
Year 2: 3.25

2.875 mil cap hit

Gag line are you thinking that Del Zotto is worth more to this team than Stepan? When Hall, Eberle, Seguin, Skinner, Ekmann Larson are all getting 4.5 million - 6 million a year that Stepan is going to take 2.5 a year? All those guys were coming off there ELC. I think Stepan is way more valueable to this team than Del Zotto don't you?

I know Sather likes to sign his players coming off there ELC to two year "Bridge Contracts" but I don't think he has had a situation like Stepan's in a long time. The market is telling a different story so I hope we can get this done ASAP!!

IMO there is no way they are touching Stepan for 2.5 a year! Maybe I am in the minority here but when you see all those other guys signing for the dollars they are I find it hard to believe that we will get Stepan for 2.5 million a year. Especially when for this year anyway he has out played almost all of them. When your contact is up this is exactly what your suppose to do , make it hard on the GM. Stepan has done exactly that.

I agree, they will not get him to sign for 2.5 million a year. He does way to much for the Rangers.

thats prob the most underrated thing about this team.. yeah we lost a lot of game this year (more then we liked).. but we only gave up no more then 2gs.. 2 things, would be a lot different..

1-Richards played like he should
2-Our PP was excelling like it has been lately..

And i dont think people underachieved outside of Richards and Gabs earlier on.. We made the trade and we actually have secondary scoring now and depth..

if both things we're going we'd easily be up there with MTL, Boston and Pitt this year.. 50pts+ for sure.. We're top 3-5 in the entire league with GAs.. Good teams capitalize on PP, we never had this, this year until we made the trade..

I agree with you.. bc i dont know how our RFAs sign these deals.. to me the biggest one out there is ROR.. he gets 5m AAV and stepan is going to sign for half that? you see guys like Meyers sign his 10yr deal and hes getting 12m this year!!! and MDZ signs 2yr 2.55 or w/e.. its funny i dont know how sather does it but kuddos to him.. I think all said and done Stepan will sign..

1- 2yr 3-3.5m AAV (Duchene, L. Coutier, Grioux)
2- 5-6yr deal 4m-4.5m AAV

Bridge contract will most likely happen but its hard to argue he shouldnt demand long term.. the guy has been effective since he came here.. he was a rookie and played our 2c and has improved since..

Step is now on pace for 71 points over 82 games. He's in the tied for 28th in scoring, for 9th in +/- and for 14th in GWG. There are 90 first liners, and his production has him among in the top third of first liners.

Among the centers, he's #15 in scoring, #5 in +/- and tied for #7 in GWG.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have our first line center.

He's also 16th in SH TOI among centers. And 3rd in total TOI for centers.
