We don't negotiate with RFAs.

An offer sheet would be welcomed but no team has the guts to offer sheet a Ranger.

Based off what?

Also, if the Rangers are going to show no effort to try and sign Stepan by telling him to sit out the year, then teams would be forced to sign him. It would be stupid to not do it.

I base it on the Rangers financial resources. It would come back to bite whichever team did it IMO.

Nobody can be "forced" to sign Stepan. He would have to sign an offer sheet and agree to that contract. Of course the Rangers would have the right to match.

Since Stepan hasn't signed an offer sheet yet and with the league's best destinations all at or above the cap already I doubt we see it happen. The Rangers should just let him twist in the wind and make him miss a season. It would really be a great statement by the owners.

Who cares about the financial resources when there's a salary cap, which is the reason why they haven't signed Stepan yet?

That Tavares deal is probably one of the best in the game right now.

Sweet contract for the team.

It sure is. If Tavares can play for 5+ mil a year for the next 6 years, than Stepan can sign a 2 year bridge deal for just under 6 mil.

The major cap restriction is really only for this season. If you're the Hurricanes, for example, do you go to battle with the Rangers on an offer sheet?

None of us know exactly why Stepan hasn't signed but he must have a pretty inexperienced agent. The cap is clearly an issue. Why is the agent trying to squeeze blood from a turnip here? Does Derek endorse moving a valuable roster piece so he can get a few more bucks this season? It's stupidity. It's not like Sather is going to blink first. The agent is out to lunch and now his client has missed most of a valuable training camp and will likely miss many games/salary.

Based on what/who? Are the other teams afraid of the big bad "Teflon GM"? Besides, I doubt the other teams will be breaking down Stepan's door anytime soon with a ridiculous offer sheet.

Stepan is the on the loosing side in this. Not the best way to start off with a new coach and a new system. Not that I think that AV is holding it against him, but he's missing time to adjust and show what he's got. Right now the 1C spot is slipping out of his hands while he's looking for a couple of 100k's. If not signed by start of the season it could turn ugly. At least around here :)

the only good news that would be good about an offer sheet.. is it makes rangers ultimately resign him immediately other then that no benefit..

rangers wont let him walk for at most a 1st, 2 or 3 (whatever it is for 5m)

i think its frustrating because our players should kno our MO..

MDZ/hags/mza signed very very very quickly when imo they shouldv'e received a lot more..

if we offered step mcd deal, which you know he would take.. why wouldn't you do that to manage the cap long term? its a good business decision

its hard to argue whos wrong.. but rangers should make the effort to resign him.. if especially its over 500 on cap or $1m overall..

umm a gm who has essentially an endless wallet, especially with the cap shooting up, and has no problem offering ridiculous contracts? yea i would be afraid to **** with his players

I've been understanding of this situation up until hearing he might miss the opening games.

It would be absolutely ridiculous if he misses regular season game(s) over this. Total ********.

Either he's not the type of guy we all thought he was or he has a complete buffoon of an agent. I'm going with the latter. Possibly sitting out some meaningful hockey games over a few $100 grand. Give me a break. Bad enough he's missed all that he already has so far.

Remember the other holdouts from the past, that it takes a bit to catch up to speed. This is a bad move on both agent and Stepan

looks like AV is set on Richards-Nash-Kreider line and the Brassard-Zucc-Benny line for now. Stepan must respond soon...

I agree that other teams aren't about to offer sheet him but I wouldn't under estimate the Rangers financial might and the aura that has against most teams offer sheeting one of their players. Has it ever happened to the Rangers?

Stepan really should get a mainstream agent. He's getting a big time pay day down the road and right now his small time agent is killing his career with a needless holdout.

Just because Tavares is an idiot doesn't mean Stepan should ne oneas well

An idiot? Or maybe, like hes said a million times, cares more about building a winner and living in a place he loves.

Stepan will not get an offer sheet from a high end team, if he wants to spend his days making stupid money in calgary then by all means, i'll take the picks.

Your arguments are all over the place. Bringing up Tavares was not meant to compare the players, it was meant to say that the Islanders have done a good job in signing their young up and comers to fair deals.

If the islanders can and have done it, then so should the Rangers.

Hamonic
Tavares
Grabner
Okposo
Etc.

They've done a very good job and look to be a very good team now and in the future.

The Rangers absolutely should not budge on a person with NO leverage and that would set a precedent for the up and comers that follow him.

If Stepan wants to sit out and lose out on potentially hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars, then let him.

You don't fold when you hold all the cards.

There have been only 8 offer sheets signed in this millennium, so it hasn't happened to mostly every team. The Rangers aren't special.

true but i think its because players in NY really want to stay and play in NY thats why their special..

so why bother offersheeting a player when you know the player will just stay with current team

This argument started when someone said the Rangers should let Stepan sit out for the year. If I were Stepan and the Rangers wanted to sit me out for the year, I will sign somewhere else.
