Kind of ironic how he saved the Flanes from a bad contract... only for them to turn around and offer a terrible one to Huberdeau.

You think Gaudreau would be a bad contract staying with the team he’d been with for a decade, who knew exactly what he was good at, and built the entire team around him?

Shit, if he’d stayed, Tkachuk might have too.

No chance Matty was gonna be here with no JG.

Yes he’s not a guy you build a franchise around or pay 10+ mil. He’s one of the most inconsistent ppg players I’ve ever seen. Sub par playoff guy to boot.

Gaudreau is a 5 ft 8 160lb LW.

LW is the least valuable position on the ice, and you shouldn’t build around wingers as a general rule.

He probably shouldn’t be your best player, but he can be your second best - he’s spectacular.

He’s just 5 ft 8 160. He can’t do it himself.

He’s not bad per se, but he’s not the kind of guy you really want leading your team. He’s more of a complimentary player than he is a leader

But you said, "he's never been good".

That's a ridiculous statement. 115-point players are good; some would even say great.

He's a career point-per-game player.

Don't go movin' the goal posts.

This was never going to be Columbus' year. Their upswing is going to be in a couple of years.

Got paid based on a 115 point season, but the season before he had 49 points in 56 games, and the one before that he had 58 points in 70 games.

He's a career PPG player but obviously now that he's 30 the expectation should be 70-80 points a year, which is what he produced ast year and what he will probably put up this year too once his shooting percentage goes from 0% to around 10-12%.

Idk, it's still a 7 (or possibly 8 with the Flames) years contract for a > 30 years old winger. Potentially a higher AAV too.

Not like he's a terrible player - he had 74 pts last year and probably isn't done putting up 70+ pts seasons. But... I don't think he's worth the 9.75M. Over his career, he put up the numbers of a borderline franchise player, but I don't think he is one.

But its not like Calgary was a wagon outside that one outlier year where everything went their way. They'd probably be more successful than now, but still stuck in a kind of mediocre state.

Unfortunately for the fans, the Front office seems to have made questionable decisions that turned off their star players. I really don't think its just a "meh canada bad" issue, other Canadian teams manage to keep their (better) star players around.

I won't pretend to know what's going on at the moment, but the whole "contract year" argument doesn't fly. He was good last year on a very bad team. Timeline doesn't line up and he definitely does not have the vibes of someone who got paid and checked out. Not last year. Not now.

He went from playing with Lindholm and Tkatchuk to Jenner and *insert player here*

Why would assume he's going to continue to play at a 115 pt pace?
