My Best Guess at the sequence of events:

DBC informs OTT that he does not plan to extend with a long term deal with them and wishes to try FA next year

OTT and DBC discuss trade and DBC provides preferred destinations

OTT fields offers but does not allow DBC's Agent to negotiate contract extension, hoping to improve offers

DBC Agent leaks preferred destinations to media as a way to control where DBC goes

DET make lowball offer to OTT

PD declines and continually talks with other teams (NYI, ANA, CAR, etc.) in hopes to drive offer up

OTT leaks other teams in discussion to help create upswing in price

Offers are all underwhelming and at 1-Yr Rental Price

OTT/PD allow DBC Agent to negotiate extension prior to trade

DBC Agent kills off the likelihood he signs extension with ANA or NYI, leaving OTT with DET and their underwhelming offer

Other teams leave the discussion over the course of days

DBC Agent discusses extension with DET, DET offers less term or money than DBC wants

Now everyone is in a weird holding pattern and doesn't know what to do

HFBoards debate non-stop for days on end
Ok God, way to out yourself. Dummy. lol

Well, it takes two to tango.

Dorion just gives him away earlier and you're on here laughing about what a terrible negotiator he is.
well ottawa did put themselves in a bad situation. we'll have to see how it turns out.

1st , 3rd, Kubalik , Valeno is my final guess
I think you’re about right. The Sens want to fill up their bottom six. Valeno and Kubalik are two good players in that regard. Not sure both of them come to Ottawa but if I had to bet, one of them does. Then likely picks.

Surprised if Sens get a 1st back. Maybe Bruins first, or Kubalik + 3rd

Who's the 50 goal scorer?
It’s a joke.

Berggren could be what? A 20-30 guy? Do you see him becoming a 30 goal guy within the next 2-3 years on the wings?

It’s more of a representation that teams love their prospects. Like Ottawa. We love Greig. He will likely not put up 30 goals in his career. But because of other things we like him more than an objective fan would.

So if you’re not moving Bergrren for a 40 goal guy then I guess the return has to be higher. Like matthews or McDavid. Or other goal scorers of a better caliber. It’s just absurd. That’s all.

If they held onto DeBrincat they'd get a 1st+ at the deadline for him. I guess they really want to get 2+ years of Tarasenko though? And would move him for just cap space?

It's probably been mentioned but I'm incredibly lazy...why would Ottawa trade him to Detroit for a weak return when he'd get the same from any other playoff bound team at the trade deadline? It's not like Ottawa's getting the draft pick til 2024 anyway.

They seemingly want to sign Tarasenko.

Yeah but they can't afford to hold on to DeBrincat and continue with the rest of their free agency plans.

They would have to pay to offload salary to keep him, and wouldn't be able to sign Tarasenko if they did.
