That seventh overall pick has a good chance at finding that Sanderson level prospect you’re hoping for. You just have to trust your scouting staff to find them. There is going to be many good players there at #7 and with Chicago not having their early first this year, I’d think they want to get back into the top 10 given they’re heading into a rebuild.
My offer is an overpayment for Debrincat. He is due for a substantial raise next summer and has RFA rights that can lead him directly to unrestricted free agency, it’s a huge risk of any team acquiring him.
All in all it’s 1 top 10 pick, 2 other first round picks, then either a top 6 forward in Brown that can be dealt for more assets, or a young middle 6 forward in Formenton that has good potential.
You’re not going to find a deal better than that, and that’s what this thread’s premise is.
If you think you can get a Sanderson-level player with 7th overall, than why not just swap out the pick for Sanderson? The Hawks might even be willing to drop one of the other pieces off then.
Regardless, based on the Hawks’ moves this year, I think they disagree with you about that pick. I’m not a huge fan of this draft myself, so it’s not super enticing to me, personally. It’s a good collection of assets for sure, but I think it lacks a real high-end piece that the Hawks would want. Also, I’m really not sure how Debrincat being an RFA in a year is a negative.
You can say that the Hawks won’t find a better offer than that, but there are two issues with that:
1) You don’t actually know that for sure
2) That statement is based on your evaluation of a potential package, not Chicago’s.
At the end of the day what I said still holds true. The Hawks will need to be made an offer they can’t refuse. Otherwise, they’ll just keep him.
