As is, they added rentals.

If they can extend some of them to good contracts, then this deadline was good.

If they can not, there was not much point towards using assets to acquire those players for one run, or overpaying them on their next contracts due to lack of options.

I know it's difficult to look past these playoffs, but like @mas0764 is saying, they have Zbad, and and Chytil (in his contract year), as the only two centers signed for next year. Copp, even Strome, if they are willing to extend have a ton of leverage to get what they want unless the Rangers are going to find someone else.

I did not expect them to be able to fix that at the deadline, yet they sort of gambled the other way by removing Barron and some picks that they could have used on center prospects, or used as trade capital on an already established center who had some term left.

I like the players they brought in, I like they did not spend tons and tons on them, yet it sure would have been nice to see them find some longer term, cap efficient, solutions at the center position.

I don't mind the gamble as you put it. It is kind of a haul. They are giving up like 5 picks and a prospect who was at least probably a cheap, net positive bottom 6 player as soon as next season.

But people are right to be optimistic that we retained our best assets (well, I don't like that the pick to Winnipeg can turn into a first. That's a lot).

But the forward core remains incomplete. Needs young talent. More. Badly.

And the longer we wait to address this the harder it gets.

Selling seems to be a forbidden subject around here, but it shouldn't be.

Lookit, they chose to spend (wisely?) for this run. Ok.

But after this run they are gonna have to get creative. They are gonna have to capitalize on something. They are gonna have to win a hockey trade (this is possible - many NHL GMs are dunces (including our own?)). They are gonna have to liquidate someone or something. They may have to move someone out for cap space to keep their kids paid and developing and to be able to afford a young 2C somewhere.

I dunno what they are gonna do. I had my suggestions but those opportunities all went by the wayside. Now they've made their bed. They either need to come up with something or experience the likelihood that they've locked themselves into a team that can't win the Cup without a major shake up.

The most likely path to a quality top 6 center isn't packaging all our good, great, and medicore kiddos, its having Lafreniere or Kakko have breakouts and make a hockey trade with one of them.

If it was as simple as lumping enough quarters together to trade for the dollar, it'd be constantly done.

Chytil does so little well as a center. There’s no point of him being there over Copp

With Chytil at center, we are too weak. Copp is the 3c. Gallant is just doing his thing

Does it really matter? I'm sure Copp takes the role of whatever the center is doing on that line.

If they break out we aren’t trading them.

Copp is on pace for 50 points despite playing on WIN's 3rd line all year. Why cant he be our all-around top 6 shutdown center going forward? Age probably means more to you than Drury & the Rangers

Not sure Copp is on the same level as Cirelli. I like him better as a third center than a second.

Hunt has been fine, no reason for him to be demoted this moment.

The real question is are they going to allow Copp to play 2C at some point to see what he’s got

That's treading water.

We need to turn a defensive prospect and/or picks into a quality forward. Well, 2 really. Plus Kravtsov.

And it is occasionally done. Brannstrom for Stone, Brassard for Zibanejad, Eichel for Tuch and Krebs. You have to find the next asterisk that comes available.

Stone's not a center, Ziba had been treading water for literally years (and treaded water HERE his first year, he wasnt good), Eichel has no neck.

The sweet spot is to trade for a Zib or Elias Lindholm while they're being medicore and before they break out. The problem is most of the time Victor Rask ends up being Victor Rask.

If you want a functional guy who's not an earth mover, you can get a Bo Horvat with enough quarters. You can't get for an Elias Petterson. Your problem is only Pettersons move the needle for you. And picks and random D propsects don't move the needle for the guy who owns Pettersons.

If your stance is to overpay for 23-26 y/o former high picks and hope to get lucky, sure? But central to that is you're relying on luck.

The gap is not very wide. If Copp had 2 Cups like Cirelli does I dont think anyone would say there is a big difference between the 2. Both very good and versatile players

He played 19:48/game and his two most common forward linemates were Ehlers and Scheifele.

I stand corrected. Even so, does that not prove my point that he can be this team's long term solution at 2C? If Copp is going to give them 50 points and play every situation thats incredibly valuable. By al accounts he's a good leader as well.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Copp produces like a third liner on the third line and a second liner on the second line.

My hot take is that the Rangers make a strong play for Larkin this summer, especially if they go deep this year. Would be a 1 year then see what happens move, but hes got a lot of connections to this team from Michigan and the US National Teams, and we know theyve been interested before. Drury has a type.

It's wild how the Right wing is the weakest link on each of the four lines today.

Expected Motte on the 3rd line over Hunt, to be frank.
There's really no tangible difference between Motte and Hunt, they are basically the same player lol. Maybe Motte has better straight ahead speed and Hunt is better on his edges but that's really it. With hunt having continuity with the team I'm not surprised at all he stays on the 3rd line.
