Our D is looking solid. Add in a good goalie and we’re in good shape.

But we still need that elite scorer. CC is a great goal scorer but that’s it. Mitch and he in the same lineup would have been insane.

Those types of players are impossible to get. I don’t know what the plan is now.

If we’d traded for Lafreniere instead of Newhook then maybe… but I don’t see the plan here on getting that scorer.
A lot has changed in just a year and a half. It could be a trade for a player whose stock is low, due to cap hit or problems with a coach, though HuGo can't perform miracles until they rid themselves of a few more boat-anchor contracts.

Also, HuGo finds a way to pile up first rounders in an outrageous manner. It isn't every year that the first rounder will drop to 31. The Habs were exceptionally unlucky this year on that front. Calgary's 2024 is looking good right now.

This is where a rich team like the Habs has to outspend other teams, where this expenditure does not count against the cap. Especially on the heels of a draft where a top forward slides past them because they didn't bother to see him live, or so they say.
The Habs had better inside information than any team because of Bobrov's inside connections. They're not going to come out and mention red flags to the public.

Crazy that the brand new green Flyers management group are being given the benefit of the doubt and hailed as geniuses after 6 teams passed on Michkov. This same Flyers group had leaks springing left, right and centre on the weekend regarding their trade talks which wasn't fair to players whose names got out. Now Krug is seen as a villain by some Blues fans for exercising his collectively bargained right to veto a trade.

We got value in our future draft picks + lots of B prospects. The 1sts especially are super valuable.

With the right dance partner we can package a combination of those and get us that extra firepower

I would not under any circumstance trade away an elite scorer for a package of prospects. So I wouldn’t expect any team to do it for us either.

If you want elite scoring talent, you’ll very likely have to draft it. We had the opportunity to do that and passed.

What we could try to do is go after a reclamation project like Lafreniere. He was projected to be an elite scorer and hasn’t been given the opportunity to really shine. So you can try that route and hope for the best. Other than that? It’s probably the draft.

I fully understand the fans who wanted an impact foward out of this draft. But there was IMO a big drop after Carlsson, Fantilli and the other fowards came with more risks or red flags. Reinbacher might not be a sexy pick, but Seider wasnt either and everyone was laughing at Yzerman when he "reached" for him 6th OV in a strong draft. Now everyone loves Seider and would pick him top 3 in a re-draft.

Reinbacher is on an impressive upward trajectory curve, the floor is high, the celling is high and Im pretty sure they wouldnt have drafted him if they didnt believe in his celling, which one is a top all situations RD IMO. Personally I wouldnt have pushed for him if I thought his celling was limited.

This is the same staff who passed on Wright last year to end up with one of the most amazing Habs drafts we have seen in years. Guys like Slafkovsky, Engstrom, Hutson, Beck, Mesar is an incredible haul, thinking otherwise would be pretty naive at this point IMO.

So why not chill out a bit, have more trust in our hockey men and give our kids a chance to develop instead of crapping on them because they were not YOUR own favorites?

Im kinda bored to read all that shit when it comes to our kids, real fans should stand behind them and give them a chance to succeed. Imagine that 18 yrs old kid reading all this crap, that hate after being drafted top 5 by the top titled franchise in hockey history, in what should be one of the best moments of his life.

Shame on you.

@KevSkillz4 Sorry it was not directed to you, you are a nice poster over here and rallly to our kids, you see the bright side of the things all the times and I respect you for that. There was nothing wrong in wanting a top rated foward at 5th OV.

Thanks! Yeah I know it's nothing wrong wanted a top rated forward. Since yesterday, I imagine Lane Hutson playing with David Reinbacher and I believe that all Habs fans should be hyping about that. If Hutson is close to Quinn Hughes (the talent is 100% there for Hutson and stats is there at this moment to be compared with Hughes) and Reinbacher become a Seider//Heiskanen type. That would be amazing for the future of this team. The talent, the potential is there for both, they only need a good development. Can't wait.

This management team has been negotiating team friendly deals in order to be in strong cap position when we're ready to spend on an impact producer either by free agency or by trade.

Also not many teams with two forwards of Caufield/Michkov's stature go far in the playoffs. Michkov has some flaws too and isn't a sure bet like Bedard to produce at the NHL level. It's hard to produce when you don't go to the dirty areas. He's also small and an average skater. Lastly, none of us know what Bobrov knows given his contacts with Michkov's parent team. It's completely arrogant and ignorant to think we know better.

I'll give you that one, but naming one player in 10+ years of Stanley Cup teams isn't the strongest argument.

Well built teams win championships, not superstar players. Having one sure helps though hehe, but the team building aspect is the most important imo.
That was literally the first thing I thought of. I didn't really go back and look.

Much on one line, CC on the other? It would drive teams insane. Both on the PP? We’d finally be able to score. Yes, they’d need to play with size but Slaf on one line, Dach on the other… it’d work.

You need 2 clutch scorers though, we have Caufield and we are missing one morr.

Everyone is toxic on social media.

The difference compared to some other teams, is we actually have a passionate fanbase who cares about the team 365/24x7 days a year, and not just when they are in the playoffs and doing well, like some team like Florida, LOL.
There’s passion and there is idiocy. What we are seeing is the equivalent to people torching cars after playoff wins/losses. Not real fans, just assholes that think they live alone in the world.

Do you know what wins championships? Strong defense. Aiden Hill was Vegas's 3rd string goalie and he waltzed to a Stanley Cup championship with an easy playoff thanks to that D.

You're overrating Michkov based on his past performances. Many can't get past the 16 year old phenom status and go into denial mode that changes in the pecking order happen rapidly with teenagers. It was the same with Wright a year ago. Six teams passed on Michkov even though nobody was reluctant to take Russians.

I have nothing against Reinbacher, but man my opinion of our front office has nose dived this past week. They went out if their way to state they'd go BPA, then after the pick they essentially admit they picked by positional need. Then on top of it they say they think he's a 2D at best that won't quarterback our 1st powerplay.
Positional need or positional premium?

I think I would’ve picked Michkov. But, I can see why a team would put a premium a on top pair defenseman. Generally speaking, I would value a defender higher than a winger.

In this situation, Michkov is potentially so good that position shouldn’t matter. However, you haven’t been able to his play live in 2 years and that’s why I can understand some people being more risk averse and selecting the safer gamble.

Bouwmeester would be a great upside. Not sure why you think he’d go 7-9 in a redraft? He’s 2nd in GP his draft year and 8th in points, among all players. Guys ahead of him are Filppula, Hudler, Frans Nielsen, Semin. I easily take Jay-Bo ahead of all of those guys. He was really good for a really long time. In fact, he’d go 3 in a redraft after Nash and Keith and 3 is where he was taken.
I don't konw. He was never seen top 2. Not a lot of offense. But good skater, and great defensively. I'd say Steen was more valuable. I'd say Cam Ward was too. And Semin PPG...well can't be discarded.

Again though...2002....one of the weakest draft ever. Where would he be in 2003?

You would be insanely right. Frankly, I TOTALLY agree with you. With the concept of BPA, NOBODY SHOULD CARE WHO IS THERE NEXT YEAR.

Here lies the problem...THAT f***ING TEAM do. They empty their NEEDS buckets. Since they go NEEDS, they should be looking at what,s available in, at least, the upcoming draft. I wouldn't. They most definately should.
I didn't quite understand your post but what I think is they picked the BPA. They didn't care about next year. He was bpa and he's a D. Who care about next year? He available now so take it. Next year is next year. A lot can change in 11 months with the junior players. As for needs, Habs have needs everywhere except LHD. So folks, leave me alone with your needs ideas/phobia. A team who picked 1st last year and 5th this year have needs every position.

I like they picked that goalie at 69th. And younger Jackeye, he can throw fists like his bro, haha !

I mean........

Montreal fans are passionate and there's also probably a good amount that are also idiotic (to use your words).

Whaddya gonna do
Sign somewhere else if I’m a player. Not surprising they don’t come here when available. You mean I pay higher taxes, I have to deal with winter and as soon as I have a bad game my family is going to get harassed online? f*** that.

Aiden Hill says "hi". Defense is the key. Monty could have got Pittsburgh and Buffalo into the playoffs.

As far as scoring goes, Newhook or Slaf could become a big scorer. As I mentioned in another post, HuGo's negotiating team friendly contracts will put is in position to add scoring. Also our quantity of future NHL minutes eaters on the blue line is insane. We'll have terrific trade assets when we're ready to take the plunge.
