Good context!

I believe we will score more goals this year but yeah, we are not going to run and gun. We are also going to focus on team D and limiting goals. Goals against is just as important as goals for. If you look at the top teams who go on deep playoff runs, their goals against is at least top 10 in many situations.
At some point, the players must understand and stick to the defensive gameplan the coaches are trying to teach them. MSL and Robidas system might not be the best for the group of d-men we have right now.

So a rookie with two games is expected to be a plus player right away because a player with eight years' experience has a bad plus/minus? How about the rest of the defense? How about the forwards? Sounds like someone with an issue.
A rookie with 2 games experience who is weak in certain areas going up against top six lines WILL get exploited.
The question comes down to is he going to be doing enough on the O side to compensate.
I also pointed out that it isn't Hutson per se that is the problem but the makeup of the top pairings.
I don't believe for a second that we can win many hockey games with next to no physicality on the back end of our top pairings.
One of Xhekaj or Struble has to play in our top 4.

I don’t see any winner hockey team in the NHL, with a Struble or a Xhekaj on their top 4.
It’s one thing to appreciate what we have into our depth chart, but this is another when it’s about to compare vs around the league.
And this is not because im hater, I just don’t see them more than 5/6th dman with limited icetime.
Imo, if you deserve to play top 4 on defense it’s because you can get 35/40 points at minimum.
Or, you are a stud defensively, physical. A la Brandon Carlo, Pesce…Always Rating ratio +..

And what makes you think Arber Xhekaj can't do that His age?
He hasn't finished progressing yet as our top six get better our D will put up more points it's a natural progression.
The man had 16 points in 18 post season games with Hamilton he has talent.
I'm not even saying Hutson won't be a top 4 D man I'm saying he isn't one yet IMO...

And conversely I don't see any winning hockey teams with a Matheson and Hutson as one two punch on the left side.
Maybe I'm wrong and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but I doubt it.
Right now Reinbacher is a better option in our top 4 than Hutson is.

I agree with you with Xhekaj. He finished on positive ratio (mainly on third pairing). Get his part of point. To me, If he becomes a second pair dman, it because he can play more minutes and still keeping a positive ratio. On a second pair, he will mainly facing, 1st and 2nd line. This is not an easy task to produce, having a positive ratio and eating a lot of minutes against top line. Or he become a Sheldon Souray and he produces a lot of points with his shot. I don’t say he cannot do it, but he is not there right now.

For Struble, he finished with a negative ratio. I mean, if Xhekaj need one step to make the second pair and be effective, Struble may need 2 step. This is not impossible. But, he couldnt be able to handle it too.
Matheson get a lot of point, but his defensive game was not terrible…. On a contender he is a 3rd dman. He had too much time on ice vs opponent first line/2nd line, because look his ratio...

Hutson to me
Is a lock top 4. He is gonna outproduce his defensive weakness.

This is exactly what he is going to have to do and it's what I don't think he'll be able to do his rookie season for a number of reasons.
I'm curious to see how he handles the rigor of games in concentrated sequences.
Look back on the year we graduated all those kids on D and not one of them could keep pace with the schedule.
Even the lads from the CHL who had far heavier work loads struggled.
Hutson will have to prove he can do it defensively and he didn't against Detroit IMO.

Thats one of the reason I wouldnt have problem to keep 8 dman.
Lets making something like :
Matheson / Guhle
Hutson / Savard
Xhekaj / Mailloux
Struble / Barron

And you keep rolling Hutson, Xhekaj, Mailloux, Struble, Barron. Their effectiveness will dictate their icetime.
This is not a problem imo if those guys don’t play all the 82 games

Don't know if this is true or not, does anybody know if Reinbacher is actually no 6ft5? Or just a rumour?

Kevin Parada is the skills coach. He’s 5’4”. Reinbacher looks to be a SOLID foot taller. Looks huge!

There was some speculation here that he might have grown a bit purely from watching his olympics pre qualifers, but nothing official as far as I know. Best guess would be 6'4 though, not 6'5. We should find out soon enough at camp.

I think the Habs management team are aware of this as well. This will be a focus moving forward. Creating offense without sacrificing defense. Teaching several players to know when to join the rush/take chances and when not too.

Wathever the beginning of his carrer gonna be, I hope the kid won’t be harrassed by fans because he was drafted ahead of Mitchkov or Leonard. Not his choice. Habs have taken him for reasons only them know better.

I still don't like the pick, but nothing we can do now. Hope he at least becomes a solid 3-4, would be shocked to see him on the top pair.

And Hutson doesn't have an ounce of Reinbachers physical tools or defensive game.

What's the price of gas got to do with onions?
In a perfect world they end up complimenting each other like many have speculated on since Dev. camp last year.
Looking forward to seeing what he can do in the prospects games as he'll likely be paired with the young David.

Genuinely impressed with the back skating power he showed a couple times when I was able to watch in the 2nd. From the Leafs blue line all the way back he just kept accelerating and maintaining a perfect gap. Can only imagine where that kind of strength can go in a fully grown man :eek3:
