Weber had an exceptional physical game, but his biggest skill was preventing plays from happening. He read the play so well that forwards literally could not skate by him or make a decent passing play. They had no choice but to dump the puck behind him, at which point he'd toss you off the puck.

It wasn't sexy, but prime Weber was pretty impossible to play against because of his ability to take away the play with his poise, gap control and anticipation.

It was never recognized here, but when Subban wasn't being flashy, he also game forwards are hard time making plays. They had to dump the puck to get by him at defensive blue line.


Another reason why folks weren't impressed with Struble until they saw him on the big club. Struble's best assests are his play without the puck and his positioning.

Boring defense is successful defense.

DR isn't boring defense tho. His size and abilities will make able to be like a "hawk" defensively. The goal is to close the gap quickly and kill the play as soon as possible, preventing the opposition to form a developed attack. And then follow up with a quick pass, catching the defense off guard of the rush.
IMO that will be really spectacular. It's exactly what MSL system needs.
