Sorry dude but I really don't consider turning an original 6 team into a farm club while forcing kids into roles they aren't ready for "significant progress".

No doubt we'd be better with Rick Nash, Derek Stepan, Kevin Shattenkirk and Alain Vigneault?---and how was the no 1st round draft picks for 5 straight years working for you? While the team was getting older we'd depleted our prospect pool drastically. That team wasn't going to win any cups and it was very debatable they even had a playoffs left in them--so should we have continued to spin our wheels? continued to trade off the future for band aids which may or may not have worked on the short term? Apparently you think so.

Not getting a great coach like Trotz is a typical Rangers mistake. They always mess up when it comes to coaching. That is why we still have not won any Cup since '94 and came close only once. Not only are Islanders finding ways to win with lack of stars on the team, but they are also one of the most physical teams.

I can already see the opposite:
Not getting a young coach like DQ was a typical Rangers mistake. They always go with the old boys club and reliving 94...

You're right.. That team didn't stand a chance at a cup after JG brought in the garbage he did lol.

1st round picks?
Unless you're a final 4 team, there is zero reason NOT to retain your 1st rounders.

To add.. What's gone right since he's taken over exactly?

He brought in a coach who doesn't know his ass from his elbow to go along with his last place tank team?

He stepped in shit twice by the grace of God with Zib and Kakko.

What else has he done to earn such high status?

This is how I feel.

This is a complete f***ing clown show but you'll always have people that refuse to see things for what they actually are.

But but.. We'll be a contender in 2 years then 3 years then 5 years.. Blah blah blah lol

Much like the coach, the GM won't be here either the next time this team wins a cup.

Too each his own I guess..

We couldn't compete with the veteran team we had. Some of them were going to be free agents anyway. We had no farm to speak of--hadn't had a first in years. If we did there would have been a middle road maybe but since there wasn't a middle road we had two choices really.....either 1) continue with the team we had or 2) dump the vets and reinvent the team with younger guys, prospects and draft picks. The second option was obviously best but it comes with all kinds of growing pains. Personally I don't think you would have been happy whatever they decided to do. I get the sense that no matter what you like to bitch and complain and I guess that's your right but it is tiresome.

Am betting that an alternative thought as to what they thought should have been done will never be offered. Well, aside from demanding that Trotz should have been here.

Remember, this is the same guy who claimed that Quinn was taking pot shots at Kakko.

I'd be very surprised, even if things go well, if Quinn is the guy who brings home a Cup.

History, and to a lesser extent my gut, tells me it is more likely to be the coach who comes in after Quinn.

I don't get this. What leads you to this conclusion? The guy hasn't even been here for two seasons and people (not just you) are already labeling him as a guy that can't win a Cup. Is it the way he runs his practices? His in game management? His locker room speeches? Just curious how you're making your evaluations. I get all coaches run their course, in any sport, but I don't see anything that leads me to believe he doesn't have what it takes. Maybe Quinn will, maybe he won't. I just don't see these glaring deficiencies that make me want to make this claim a year and a half into his tenure.

Okay, let’s pump the breaks a little.

It’s not really a Quinn thing, so much as trend within the sport.

Often times a coach that develops players through a rebuild has usually run his course by the time said team has built up to a contender. Some of this is teams often needing to change things up and challenge the status quo to take the next step, some of it is timing (average life span of a coach vs. average rebuild time), and sometimes it can come down to finding the right personality for the right stage of life a team is experiencing.

Quinn very well could be here when the team peaks. However, precedent probably isn’t his ally on this issue.

So nothing specifically about Quinn? Seems like a lot of talking in circles. Ok.

For tonight's game at least, Quinn should at least ice the same lineup and let those guys redeem themselves in the eyes of their fathers, their makers, and their coach.

How is it talking in circles?

The average NHL coach is employed 2.4 years.

Quinn has been here 1.25 years.

Let’s even assume he is here four years, that’s 2022.

What odds would you give the Rangers winning a cup in 2022?

Or if you prefer:

When are the Rangers most likely to seriously challenge for a cup? How many years would Quinn be here at that point?

And don’t think Quinn didn’t factor that into his calculations when negotiating his contract.

He signed a 5 year deal, pretty standard no?

I don't know when the Rangers are going to win a Cup, if ever. Neither do you. You said you didn't expect him to be around if and when the Rangers win. You come across as a guy plugged into the organization and I was just asking what lead you to that conclusion. You're giving me word problems and NHL trends and not offering any specific insight on what leads you to believe Quinn doesn't have what it takes to go from development coach to Stanley Cup winning coach.

The Rangers went to the Cup finals in 13-14. It would have been ludicrous to tear the team apart at that point. Still because of cap issues for the next few years we would lose a player or two every summer because we couldn't afford to keep them. The Rangers were at least a semi-serious contender through 15-16 and during that period of time and also in 16-17 we would trade away draft picks to enhance our playoff chances. None of that was rocket science. Practically every good team makes deals at the deadline to enhance their chances. Pittsburgh does it. The Caps and Bruins do it. The Blackhawks would do it when they were good. The Sharks do it---so does Vegas.

What it did though was deplete our pipeline--meanwhile our players were aging out and the window closing and the Rangers braintrust saw no real light ahead anymore---took a step back and closed the window themselves. In retrospect that was a very smart thing to do. Most teams don't do that and when they inevitably decline don't fall to the bottom of the well but kind of gradually move into mediocrity and sometimes for a long while. The Rangers thing here was to go from good to terrible in one step but in trading off assets to do that they injected a shitload of quality prospects into their pipeline. It hurt--but if you've been a lifelong Rangers fan you should be use to hurt---and it comes with a shit ton of growing pains and it also calls for a bit of patience to build bodies from teens to adults, to build chemistry among these younger guys, to sort out who to keep and who to move along for other assets. It's a process--you're either up for it or not.

Most people here including yourself understand all this--there are some though who seem almost deliberately obtuse. They're going to moan the whole way through the process. It's what it is and for those who can't take it maybe they should leave.

I’m sorry that what I laid out there feels like a word problem and is beyond your comprehension this morning.

It’s really not a complicated premise, nor did my initial response make any declarations.

And no, a five year contract for a rookie coach isn’t necessarily standard and his negotiating for the fifth year was a widely covered topic.

I think you’re over-thinking this.

One could even argue was that they should have started the process a year earlier. There was a message sent when then got their doors blown off by the 'Pens. But, you are right and kudos to Gorton for making the decision to close the window himself as opposed to leaving a crack open which leads to mediocrity.

So you're saying they gave him an extra year? Seems like they think he would be the guy to get them out of the rebuild then. And trust me, it's not over my head. Feels more like you hedging your bets. Take a stand, man.

My stand is that he’s not going to be here if they win a cup. That was stated right up front.

And yes, they gave him an extra year. But that was not part of their initial offer.

And yes, I fully expect him to guide the rebuild. What I don’t expect is for him to be the guy behind the bench if they’re playing for a cup. For the reasons I just outlined in greater detail.

Cool. All I asked is what specifically you saw in Quinn's coaching ability that led you to that decision. That was it. You gave me trends and theories, but that's fine. No need to continue.

Actually, I also addressed that by saying:

“It’s not really a Quinn thing, so much as trend within the sport.”
