Something tells me Lundqvist is not a fan of this coach. And when that happens the coach usually gets canned.

Are you dating him or something? Because I've never really seen someone spend this amount of time defending someone that nearly the entire fan base doesn't like.

If you don't find fault with any of the above then you're just trolling but I'll come back to read your answer anyway.

What is it you're seeing in this cocky prick that apparently no one else sees?
Yes, I am.

First of all, it is not the entire fanbase but some completely unhinged posters on a board.
Do you really think Kakko is having such a hard time living the millionaire lifestyle abroad?
Do you think they just let him wander around Manhattan to fend for himself?
Give me a break.
So the answer is no, you did not have to ever move across continents, away from your family and play in the toughest league in the world. Which is the only way that one could actually write what you did.
Other than Howden, has DQ ever had anything nice to say about any of the kids?
Sorry, but what exactly does he need to say?
Has he ever even once taken ownership or shouldered the blame for any of this train wreck??
Aside from quibbling about Andersson, I franky do not see what he takes the blame for. Again, please point out examples here.
Can you name some of the good things that he's done without plugging in some kind of generic bull**** like the team is young?
I think we all know that at this point.
Installing accountability that was missing for so long and seeing players take steps forward.
Development, system, strategy, in game coaching, delegating ice time, DEFENSE??
Have you seen who is playing defense? And what is the problem with ice time? Not going to those to whom you think it should?

You're really killing me with context here, fan boy.

True leader right there lol.

TC started on 9/12 and he still can't get professional athletes to adhere to any kind of defensive effort outside of 3 periods.

Before I ignore this thread completely, I'll ask you this..

Multiple other people in just this thread are saying that his comment on Kakko isn't bad at all. I agree. He's not saying "this is why his ice time is what it is" he's saying "here are some logical reasons why he's taking a bit longer than a player people expected him to produce similarly to"

Disclaimer: This is not necessarily a Quinn-centric critique it's just the best thread for this post.

This team absolutely sucks ass. From top to bottom. They are good at absolutely nothing and are the definition of a one-line team if I have ever seen one. On all aspects of the game but especially defense, I've never seen such a bad team in terms of f***ing hockey fundamentals. Can't make a pass. Can't receive a pass. Can't close the gaps if their lives were at stake. Can't win board battles or make smart plays to keep forechecks alive. Stupid pinches. Missed assignments constantly. Slow decision making and taking too long to initiate simple hockey plays. They are an absolute shit heap from all aspects and I have a very hard time blaming one player, or a specific group of players.

I will tier the players so far relative to expectations below:

Great/No Complaints
1. Fox
2. Panarin
3. Zibanejad
4. DeAngelo
5. Fast

Doing Some Good Stuff
1. Strome
2. Buchnevich
3. Lemieux
4. Smith

Meh
1. Trouba
2. Skjei

Not Good

1. Hajek
2. Kakko
3. Howden
4. Andersson

Get The f*** Off My Team

1. Kreider
2. McKegg
3. Staal

We are dead last, as a team, in every major statistical category and while I understand that this is basically last year's team the structure is non-existent. The same problems have been magnified and I do not buy that it is the youth of the team; the results have been too inconsistent across age groups to support this imo.

I think it's a little mental gymnastic-y to completely absolve Quinn of blame here. The team has not been prepared for a single game this season outside of Buffalo, and have been decimated defensively in every game except Ottawa. This is absolutely pathetic and I am seeing egregious issues in coverage and structure from top to bottom and someone needs to have an answer because the team is not this bad. No team is this bad fundamentally.

I really agree. Yeah this isn't the best lineup in the league by any means, but there is no explanation for being this bad against so many different teams.

Okay, you got killed by Boston. Not great but they're the cream of the crop, it happens. But, this team has had their teeth similarly kicked in almost every game.

And I definitely suspect coaching is a significant part of the problem. Not saying fire him because I thought he did a pretty good job last year, but he needs to adjust this year. The constant dumping the puck in situations where they clearly won't be the first to retrieve it is maddening. And on the other side, when teams dump the puck into their zone, they're almost never able to get in and fire it out quickly. Part of the problem is personnel no doubt but they shouldn't be this bad imo.

It's obviously less than 10 games and this is just one stat but the Rangers are on pace for the 2nd worst CF% rating as a team since 2008. Only the 2015 Sabres (who were intentionally tanking) would be worse.
Just going to leave this here....

Installing accountability that was missing for so long and seeing players take steps forward.

Have you seen who is playing defense? And what is the problem with ice time? Not going to those to whom you think it should?

The problem is he’s holding players accountable for nebulous things like “effort” and “hard work” which is impossible to quantify, completely subjective and totally worthless when the players, right now— seem to not be doing very basic hockey plays. You can’t “outwork” mistakes all over the ice. You can’t “hustle” when the defense just backs in and gives the attacking team 6 plus feet of space each and every rush. You can’t “dig deep” when the Rangers crashes the net so hard they don’t have a third forward High in the offensive zone. You can’t “skate harder” when the team does not have sticks in passing lanes. Coaches can preach “work harder” when the fundamentals are there but Quinn seems to believe that “hard work prevails over everything else” and to some extent I’d believe that and he’s not wrong, but it’s compeltly obvious to me that this team has forgotten almost every single fundamental aspect of the game. Now I agree there is very little to work with but that’s even more of a reason to keep the game simple, install a game plan that works and hold guys accountable for not abiding by the game plan.

Here’s the real defense of coach Quinn if you want to denfend the guy. Let’s say he does install a “hold guys accountable for fundamentals” drive like I’d like to see— his issue is he has absolutely no one in the organization to call up or replace most of these guys on the NHL roster and there are seemingly few leaders on this NHL roster who hold anyone accountable for anything. That’s a brutal position for a coach to be in and creates an impossible situation for fairly obvious reasons. It’s been 2 plus years now and they can’t even find a captain for this roster. When asked, the coach and management keeps saying “we want to be patient with this decision and not put an unfair burden on someone too early.” That’s code for— no one wants to lead this team so we will just keep waiting.

I mentioned it in a post on a game day before. Does the fact that this team doesn't have a captain affect how the team plays game by game? Imo, yes. I would highly prefer it if the team had a captain, someone who could shoulder the burden and lift his team up too. People kept saying Zibanejad should be captain. Just the eye test, he doesn't seem intense enough to me. Not a vocal guy (and I think he's even said that himself) which is what I would prefer than a "lead by example" type and I think is necessary because they tend to be soft and country club like. The vets such as Staal and Smith plain suck as hockey players, they're not setting any examples. Lundqvist is the perfect captain to me: demanding on himself and his team, vocal on and off the bench, could win games by himself, amazing ambassador, experienced, has won things, and it's just too bad he's a goalie and old. It sounded great to read that a lot of the players went with Kreider to train- that sounds like a captain thing to do and especially for the younger players. But he's so in his own head most of the time, and inconsistent player which is not what I would want in a captain at all. Zibanejad is also inconsistent.

Yes.. It's not the end of the world but the DQ bullshit goes way beyond that and as much of a jerkoff as I think he is, I'd be more than happy with a functioning system at this point.
I don't think that's too much to ask..

Exactly. People absolving Quinn of blame are all the ones who pull out the "youth" card in every single argument.

Subjectively, I’m just not a fan of Quinn as an NHL coach.

Objectively, there are plausible excuses for a lot of the issues we collectively seem to have with him, but as the list grows, I’m still not sure that just because there IS a plausible excuse means it’s the actual reason for all of the issues. Putting aside most of the personnel or ice time squabbling though, the system just doesn’t look like it works at all and it makes you wonder what we’re doing in practice when we look this bad on the ice. This roster wasn’t supposed to be this bad, even with the unpredictable nature of youth. We are playing fundamentally poor hockey and fundamentals are on the coach, IMO.

Yeah this is why I’m jumping on the coach and it’s not like me to do that. If I saw any level of fundamental hockey occurring I would continue to lean on the “let these guys develop and give the players time.” However, if I was management right now I’d be at every practice and every film session and hovering over this staff like hawks to see exactly what these new and young players are being “taught.” Right now I think they are just being made to feel like crap about there games and belittled for not working hard enough and that’s not only toxic, it’s flat out not developing hockey players.

Quinn was never even that good as a college coach. How he got this job is beyond me.

Him, Byfield or Raymond would be big gets.
I think Holtz and Lundell are being under rated. I get why Byfield and Raymond are ranked 2 and 3 but I think Holtz and Lundell would be 2 and 3s in most other drafts recently. This year is deep so if we need to figure out our coach is in over his head this season is not a bad one to bottom out in.

I disagree. Just because you cannot quantify something does not mean that you cannot set a standard. Which by all accounts he did with his non-negotiables.

What I think Quinn's point is that you can have all the skill you want, but without hard work and fundamentals, it is all for naught. Not that I am Quinn. Or play him on tv.

I believe that he is waiting for the new core to emerge, before he names a captain. Which will not be until after the TDL trades this year. And yes, I believe that he is basically in a brutal spot due to who he has available to him. After these call ups, there is NO ONE else. The Rangers may have a great pipeline, but it takes a while to build out the pipes so that water can start flowing.

Naturally. One presumes that you know more by believing that Quinn is taking potshots at Kakko.
You basically called me an idiot and also unhinged, mean while you haven't addressed anything in my post so I'll just stop here.

I called your comments regarding Quinn taking verbal pot shots at Kakko idiotic. In turn, I have answered your questions. I responded and gave you what I was looking for. What in turn are you looking for?
You stop explaining yourself when you realize people only understand from their level of perception
Asking you questions and reasoning is not quite the same thing as explaining yourself. If you, however, need to to elucidate my statements/questions, I will endeavor to do so once you tell me which ones.

I really don't get the negative interpretations of Quinn's comments about Kakko. If anything, he is providing him cover.

Also, what Quinn meant in his comments is that this team has plenty of skilled players, but he would like each guy to have a little bit of Lemieux in him.

I disagree. Just because you cannot quantify something does not mean that you cannot set a standard. Which by all accounts he did with his non-negotiables.

This does not make much sense to me- how can you set standards for something that can't be measured? If he wants to measure "hard work" how can he fairly do that beyond the eye test which is subjective???

Quinn won't get fired anytime soon, nor should he be for the time being. At this point though, you have to make some changes to the staff.

Ruff needs to go. The guy has literally never had a good defensive team. I get that some NHL experience was needed last year with it being Quinn's first year, but it's time to move on.

I want to see what Greg Brown can do. Maybe he's not the answer, but he can't be worse than Ruff.

I also don't know how long I'd keep David Oliver around either. No offense to him, but he's been on the business side of hockey operations for the better part of the last decade. Coaching an NHL offense is not the same as being the director of player development. And Colorado fans don't exactly give him praise for his time being with them

The thing I keep coming back to is, Quinn needs to be surrounded by guys that are great on the X and O's to be successful. People were saying this before he got hired.

So I think it can work, but not as currently constructed.
