Without looking it up, there is some small loophole that was mentioned on here this summer by a more CBA-versed poster than myself, and I don't think Spooner has arbitration rights, and thus reduced negotiating power.
cap friendly has him eligible for arbitration... from what ive read of the rules I see no reason he wouldn't be
on the other hand david pastrnak isn't eligible... and despite all the talk of giving him a 7-8 year deal, I think that is the wrong choice to make. when a guy isn't eligible for arbitration its stupid not to bridge the kid.
theres been a lot of very talented players who get a huge contract and never again live up to their potential. playing hockey requires you to work through the pain. it requires you to live a Spartan lifestyle off the ice to keep in shape. it requires you to leave your crap at the door when game starts and focus.
talent alone... doesn't let you be elite. its a full 24/7 lifestyle and a lot of hard work to be Crosby or gretzky or orr
pastrnak is looking to be our best pure goal scorer since neely... its a great great thing... but id like to see him have 3 above average seasons before we open up the vault for him.
bridge him now... then give him the moon on his next deal... we get 10 years locked up instead of 8 and that might be a huge thing once ufa rolls around. losing him at 28 would really suck
