Surprised it took them that long. There's no need for people to defend this guy as much as they do. He didn't do a whole lot for this franchise.

This seems like a dumb time to do this though... not right after a lockout is ended and the season is about to start....

Tank nation needs to pack their bags and move to another city, and support another team. Become Islanders Tank Nation, there you have an owner who hates his own team, couldn't give a **** about profits and is fine brining up the rear of the NHL.

This organization will never loosen the reigns enough for that to happen, and his move is evidence of that.

If its true Burke didn't want to move on Luongo, then its likely because he didn't like the price. Burke was going to head into this season okay with the potential result of missing the playoffs... knowing that he could once again accumulate prospects and that he'd set up a scenario where he could make major moves in 2014.

Instead, ownership pulls the plug and brings in a GM looking to get the same place, but with a different road.

This team will NEVER EVER be allowed to tank. THe only way to acquire a top pick in the draft is to have it done by mistake... aka a collosal tailspin like 2012.

Some point that stood out for me...
- Burke fired for his style
- Nonis hired for his style
- Nonis says 'I am just like Burke but more patient'

What the ??? does that mean? Was Burke going to pull the trigger on some massive moves but the board said no?

i think style refers to style with the media/communication not hockey related

i never liked Burke's style with the media but i never liked his style with hockey either

John Shannon made a good point - that both Bell and Rogers are very button down type organizations who might want a less confrontational and controversial face of the Leafs organization. It actually makes some sense to me.

It's not the proper reason to fire some one.

Duthie said he personally believes Nonis/Management wanted Luongo and Burke was hesitant. Not that this was the reason Burke was fired, but to deny that it was not considered in the decision is silly.

If that is indeed the case, why is "management" involved at all? That would p^ss me off royally if management is/was involved in any of the on ice decisions. That's why they hired a GM. Let him and his team do their jobs.

No 1st line C
No #1 goalie
Teams have missed the playoffs every year under his reign
Mediocre farm system

Cant believe how many people are making it seem like we just fired some guy who did wonders for this franchise.

I'm not defending Burke, but what part of the Marlies is mediocre?

was taking a shot at the decision to hire Nonis as the solution to fixing the Burke problem

Why? Makes the most sense. Nonis reminds me of Anthopolous. A young, smart and under the radar kinda GM. I know a lot of fans loved how Burke handled the media. How he gave the middle finger to fans, media and anybody else questioning his management. Of course thats not gonna fly for an owner who IS the media and understands that the fans are actually the ones who make all these buffoons rich.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

God forbid this organization should have a stable management group for more than 3 or 4 years, it might actually lead to some long term success.

Exactly, a GM and management group needs more than 3-4 years to have an impact. You can't just keep firing guys every couple of years because they aren't successful on the ice. They need time to implement their ideas.

Why would a star player want to sign with a loser team?

The Leafs are already a loser team
Being really awful for 48 games really isnt going to change the current image of the Leafs. I guess by your logic anyone that suggests we have a shot at either of the two mentioned players is out to lunch.

wheres the ChuckWoods signal?

You're scared of a group that is allowing the GM of the team in your avatar to spend what is needed to drastically improve the team?

Even a blind squirrel can find a nut eventually. It took them a long damn time to do that.

And yes I am scared. This was before they gave the green light to AA. What I am scared about is not letting the people you hired to run the ship, run the ship. I'm worried that were going to have a bunch of meddling going on.

Is it tanking or avoiding another mediocre season? Personally, I do not make moves that have marginal improvement at large cost. Better to accumulate assets and make your move next season.

I don't see either of them signing here. Hope I'm wrong.

The corporate part is interesting-because Bell/Rogers own the Leafs (and as has been pointed out, the PC was pretty much FULL of Rogers/Bell-TSN employees), if indeed they have a more "democratic" person, one could argue that they now own a team which answers to reporters effectively owned by the companies who are asking questions to a low key/democratic type of GM-effectively they control all aspects of the team and Media in Toronto.

Whether there's a "puppet" here or not remains to be seen, but a cynic has to wonder now, with control effectively of the Message(Leafs) and the Medium (GM/Media)-who do they answer to?

Be interesting to see too how the Lou situation works out.

I personally don't believe this to be the case. Nonis is not as bombastic as Burke but he is not the type that will take orders from management or let anyone tell him what personel moves to make. As I said in my previous post, he was under immense pressure to obtain B. Richards but stuck to his guns. He is quiet but fairly principled.

I would be less concerned about the corporate puppet angle and more concerned about the hockey side of things.

I'll preface by saying I'm not a big Burke supporter and not defending him, but it's 100% fair to say he didn't have ANY opportunity to acquire either of those at any time during his tenure without overpaying, and particularly with regards to a #1 C he probably didn't have any opportunity at all, overpaying or not - true #1s are rare and valuable and teams don't part with them. That's why you play with what you've got, build the team through the draft and be patient - which is what it appears Burke was trying to do

Quit telling people how to cheer for their team and quit assuming you fully understand what's going on unless you knew last night Burke was going to be canned this morning.
