Wow that is quite a leap from what was reported as a minor day to day injury. That link says that after a surgical procedure it is 3-4 weeks before before a doctor will allow full use of the elbow. And then he will need to have the elbow protected to prevent a reinjury.

The "official" word is 2 more games. I'm no doctor so I hope that is true but the description of the surgical procedure and recovery time suggests that it will be longer.
Professional athletes don't abide by the same timetables that us mere mortals do, mostly as a result of the "treatment" they have access to that we don't. It happens in the NFL all the time. Injuries that would have us useless months later, they're back on the field in a week or two.

The truth, as usual, may be somewhere in the middle. The "general guidelines" are meant to apply to everyone, including a 55 year-old, basically sedentary male. They also assume that this is a person who has "normal" contact and follow-up with a physician, which means doctor appointments weekly, at the most.
Backes is not 55, not sedentary, and has access to team trainers who can monitor his elbow and report daily to the team physician. And, unlike most of us, he's willing and able to upend his life and livelihood to concentrate on healing his elbow, while most of us would have to go back to work and might be able to do a little bit of "home physical therapy" by ourselves for an hour the side, at the absolute most.
In fact, Backes' job now is to do literally everything he can to get healed.
That said, there are limitations to what the body can do, athlete or not. It's definitely NOT good news for the Bruins, since Backes is arguably the most important addition the Bruins have made this year, and the second most important addition is out for three weeks at a particularly inopportune time.

Out indefinitely? Great way to start his career as a Bruin. If Tuukka is also out for an extended period of time, this is another lost season. Hopefully we actually let the kids play this year as opposed to trading assets at the deadline for JAG veterans.

Actually, in all seriousness, I had that procedure done a few years ago. It's really nothing. They just inject a needle and drain out the fluid. It's not "surgery"; it's an outpatient procedure. (unless he actually had something different done).
I've had mine drained too and agree with you.
But he didn't have it drained. His bursa was, I believe, surgically removed.

Oh, gotcha. Well, then that would be surgery for sure. Still, seems to me (not a doctor; don't even play one on tv) that it would be minor, hopefully, and that he'll be back soon.

This is the risk you take when you sign a player his age to a long term deal. Ray Charles could have seen this coming, even if this is a little earlier than most expected. Please tell me he did it during the Kadri fight. That would be perfect.

Haha, come on Lonnie, this is the most random injury I think I've seen in hockey, don't think age has much to do with it.
same thing no doctor here.
My best guess is two things to watch out for would be incision heal - a week or so?
More important infection. That's a nasty (elbow pad) breeding ground.
We'll see I guess.

As an old ****, I can tell you that your body just doesn't accept abuse that you can when you're younger. I've never had a bad back, but mine went into spasm last year just walking down a flight of stairs from no trauma at all...

I hear ya on the getting old part, I'm 34 and even have trouble dragging my ass off the couch to go to rec hockey some nights, don't know how Z can do it all year.
im predicting a staph infection next, and he'll be out until January.

And I agree. The Bruins can (barely)get by without Backes but they are doomed unless MacIntyre can meet the challenge.
