He was born to be a Bruin.

With Bergy out it makes the signing even better. We finally have a legitimate back up for him and for Krejci.

Love this guy. I still can't believe he left St. Louis but I am ecstatic he did.

Absolutely.

People worried about this guy last 2 years

Year 4: $4 M 8 team trade list
Year 5: $4 M 15 team trade list

Some seem to think $6 M with no movement clause

I think he plays well and makes it thru in black and gold colors

But their are options

But what about Loui??? We'll miss his heart and soul leadership qualities!!!:sarcasm:

Sorry but after a summer of hearing some of Eriksson's extended family on here cry about what an awful move it was getting Backes and how much better Loui is and will be, even if it only for one game, I'm going to gloat. Backes has been one of my favorite players for years and plays the game the right way.

I'll take years of what I saw last night over five years of the advanced stats geeks favorite son Loui Eriksson.

Totally agree. I had a soft spot for Loui, but I certainly believe Backes will be much better for this team overall for years to come. Thought he looked really good last night for what he brings.

“That’s why we went and got him, we talked about that for a long time,’’ said coach Claude Julien, likely to have Backes again centering Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak when the Bruins face the Leafs Saturday night. “He’s a big, strong player who can play center, play wing. We liked his net-front presence, and how strong he is.’’

“He definitely has a room presence,’’ said Julien. “He didn’t come from a team being captain by mistake. He’s got a great presence. He’s got a great personality, blends in well with the players. It hasn’t taken him long, he hasn’t sat back and said, ‘Well, I’ve got to make myself comfortable here,’ before he started speaking. He’s felt comfortable from the get-go, been a great addition to our core group.’’

I really want to see how good this team is if Bergeron Backes Krejci Pastrnak and Marchand are healthy.

That's really good group of different styles but much overlap as well

Claude will sleep well

Couldn't be happier with our forwards group; the addition of Backes, evolution of Marchand and Pastrnak, evergreens Krejci and Bergeron, combination of everything.

People flipping out over Backes 5th year when he will actually make half ($4M) what he makes this year and can traded to 15 teams

But that will never happen.

Heck the Bruins traded for a 41 year old Mark Recchi who retired at 43
. That would be 7 years older than Backes age when context up. More likely Backes does a Rex and signs year to year and plays till 40

I was aggravated about signing what I think is a less productive, older player than the guy they let go,this year and next year. He had an excellent first game, but I'm sure as **** gonna be tracking the progress of both.

My first choice was Backes - loved it. If he can get 250 points next 5 years I'm good

I'm an intangible guy

I'm going to track Seguin vs Bergeron to see who's better

Add Vatrano to that list.

Question: with Backed is Krejci expandable ?

There is no urgency at the moment but if we really need a top D , use Krejci as bait

I'm looking for 100 points from Backes in the next 2 years and 140 from Loui. What you like about Backes-physicality,leadership,able to play 2 positions is great, but it doesn't guarantee or necessarily add up to more wins. If Backes gets 60 points and Loui gets 70,I'll give you the win. I hear the sarcasm as Seguin will probably outscore Bergy but never be as good.

That fight last night and the resulting injury from it is based entirely on stupidity. No reason for him to do that in that spot. It didn't lift the team. It didn't set the tone. It took him off the ice for 5 minutes and forced Claude to juggle lines when they were already down and already playing like ****. To me, him going with Kadri there was nothing more than spot picking and selfish. I'm sure this point of view will not be popular here, but it's true. He hurt the team with that one dumb move.

Really? Down 1-0 I felt it was the perfect time to try and spark the team.

Marchand went on to kill any sort of momentum with 2 stupid penalties right after.

Do they ever do anything right in your eyes?

I agree with most of that, but more in the sense that I don't want to see a guy of that age, skill set, and injury possibility in an enforcement role unless absolutely, positively necessary. That would translate to perhaps one, maybe two such instances in a season. Last night should not have been one such instance.

Exactly. His value and worth to the team is greater than sending a message in a situation like that. Especially at this early stage of the season. There was no real reason and now it may cost him time while he heals.

Sure. All the time. Although if I were to seriously criticize the team for anything this early, it's their god awful first pp unit. They've been terrible. I put that one on coaching more than anything. The fact that Czarnik and Beleskey have more PP TOI through the first two games than Marchand and Pasta is criminal.

I just didn't think a statement was needed last night after falling down 1-0. Maybe after 2-0 or 3-0, but one goal in was premature. And you know what? It didn't work. In fact it had negative value. Backes got hurt and they gave up two more goals. Failure all around, IMO.

The second call was marginal. The first one was correct. Either way, Backes spending five in the box screwed up the continuity and forced them to juggle lines. They basically played the first period in a constant state of mix and match because of it, and the chemistry never got going for any line.
