Through 54 games, 12G and 26 points. On pace for almost 40 points and even more impressively, has played in every game thus far.

Safe to say, he's back on track?

Safe to say. He's been awesome. Still makes me nervous every time he takes a hit.
 
He's been great. He's never going to be Datsyuk, but I think his hands have looked better than ever this season. It looks like he's playing with a lot of confidence.
 
Id rather have him playing as the 3rd line center instead of the 1st/2nd line winger.
 
He's been a beast this year. He kills it down low with the puck. I would love to see him and Sheahan together at some point. Feel like they would look good together.

Oh yeah I agree. I guess I should have stated I would put Z and D back together on line 1 and have Sheahan centering line 2. I think Sheahan deserves more of an opportunity with better offensive linemates and I don't think Helm is a top 6 player.

I actually kind of agree but I don't want D and Z together, that just doesn't seem to work as well as it would in theory ever. I'd do:

Sheahan - Datsyuk - Nyquist
Tatar - Zetterberg - Abdelkader
Jurco - Helm - Weiss
Miller - Andersson - Glendening

Sheahan in a top six role could be just the spark Datsyuk/Zetterberg need to get the offense going even strength. Weiss and Jurco are being wasted on the fourth line.
 
Honestly, I'm glad Babcock is mixing it up like crazy. Come playoff time, you never know what line make-up you'll need to compete against the other team. Getting chemistry with other line mates is pretty important.

That Tats-Dats-Helm line is just crazy. And Helm is pulling off some skill just by being on that line. May be that rubs off when push back down to the 3rd, or 4th...making those lines more dynamic.
 
I actually think switching to the wing was the best thing that's happened to his career.

He can still spot duty at center but on the wing we can use his speed to recover dump ins and for break out plays. I also think he excels around the boards and has a chemistry with Datsyuk that not many of our players do.

I think he'll put up great numbers if we use him as a winger on the top line vs playing 3rd line center.

Tatar-Sheahan-Helm as a third line would be a nightmare for other teams.

But would Building the top 6 with Z, Datsyuk, Abdelkader, Nyquist, Jurco and Weiss be worth it?

I agree. The Wings are comfortably in the playoff picture, they can afford to mix lines up to find the best possible combinations to use heading into the playoffs.
 
Don't know if you guys noticed or not but the practice lines the other day had Tatar and Nyquist switching lines with each other.

Agreed. I guess I don't mind ONE of those guys on the 4th line but I hate when both Miller and Glendening are playing on the 3rd line (like the recent practice lines) over Weiss and Jurco.
 
I remember when people were talking about Helm as if his career was done with all the setbacks he had the last few years. Being fully healthy is just awesome for him and he's having a great year to boot. Couldn't be happier for the guy.

I like the idea of the Jurco - Helm - Weiss line on paper, but I agree with Flashy when he says that playing on the wing has really been a career extender. He looks great with Datsyuk.

It honestly looks like he's been working with (or at least taking pointers from) Dastyuk on stick-handling and edge work... he's shown some moves here lately where I've caught myself asking, "Where the hell did that come from?"

That's what I said aloud when Darren got all Datsyukian behind the net, brought one out front, and stashed it under the bar. When did he stop channeling Draper and start channeling Pavel? :handclap:

he keeps getting playing time with Datsyuk and has averaged around a minute of powerplay time/game etc this year and isn't even pacing 40 points,yet people keep saying he's doing a great job

people put too much stock into how they think he's looked and not enough stock into what he's actually produced,his production flat out isn't enough for the roles he's had
 
It's the eye test thing IMO. Instead of just looking like a hard working speedster with hands of stone, Helm has been showing a lot of finesse while still working hard every shift. It's what many have wanted to see from Helm for years.

Which roles are you speaking of?

For reference, Helm's ATOI is 14:58 per game, which is 8th among forwards on the Red Wings.

Why not just leave Sheahan at 2c? He should play there. I would do:

Abdelkader - Datsyuk - Nyquist
Tatar - Sheahan - Zetterberg
Jurco - Helm - Weiss
Miller - Andersson - Glendening
 
Helm is a favorite of mine. really happy to see him healthy all year. Guy can do a lot of things well and his speed is disruptive to opponents

Like someone else mentioned, he's gotten 3rd line minutes on average. His production is great for his role and his value is clearly much greater than his point totals.
 
Darren Helm and Tomas Tatar are two of my favourite Red Wings. I believe they really add to Datsyuks line by generating a lot of scoring chances. Hard to split them up when the chemistry is obviously working.

But something needs to be done about Nyquist and Zetterburgs line.
