Darren Helm

To suggest I said you *only* talked about box scores is also a lie. How pedantic do we need to get? You quoted box score production for two guys who aren't playing roles where that's a meaningful measure of comparison in any way, shape or form. Sorry, it's disingenuous. *shrug*

"Totally agree, quoting box scores about Darren Helm completely misses why he was a good player for the team, and why he was a tremendous guy on the PK and forecheck. It's utterly disingenuous to act like production is the only difference between Riley Sheahan and Darren Helm."

sorry i read this quote from you which was clearly directed at me and i didnt see in that paragraph where you mentioned how i had talked about sheahan being younger, cheaper, bigger, stronger and more skilled

i will re-read it again, my mistake

I like and have a great deal of respect for Helm, but I think anything over $3mil and you absolutely let him walk.

I bet Holland overpays and brings him back. Sigh.

People keep talking about a loyalty contract for Helm, ignoring that Helm has the power to test free agency.

And be as cynical as you want, but Holland isn't giving Helm $4M. We've never been in such a rough cap situation before while also being so untalented.

Helm is not even going to consider free agency once the Holland sweet heart deal hits the table. Helm won't get 70% of what Holland is going to offer from any other GM.

Yep would not be surprised to see Holland giving Helm a 5 year $20 million contract, Sure hope not but i wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

I think you are right around what it will be, payment and term for past performances and past cups

Didn't Helm say he wanted some security in how he was going to be played? Do you think he would sign to a home town discount if he was promised a consistent 3rd line roll? He said he doesn't mind playing in the bottom 6.

Home town discount? When was the last time we got one of those?

Probably Kronwall... but now we have to pay for that with recapture because of the stupid NHL.

What do you think a fair contract for Helm is?

Ok, now add 2 years and 1 million to it.

Yep personally myself i was thing 4 years and around $3.5M per would be a fair offer he is what he is a 3rd line center/winger type with good speed and so so hands pretty much what we have with AA but only AA has better hands then Helm. But yeah i have a feeling that Holland is going to resign Helm to a 5 year $20 million he still brings quite a bit to the table for us. And i'm a big Helmer fan myself.

Yeah Helmer has been a Wing his entire career, And i know that he's Hollands guy and i don't see that changing. I could easily see Helm playing his entire career in Detroit it sounds like both Helm and Holland have a mutual interest in getting a contract done and i'm pretty sure that Holland will make sure that Helm gets what he wants in playing time and the kind of roll that he wants to play in Detroit don't think this will be a factor.

The fact that Holland didn't get Helm to sign an extension, and the fact that he hasn't negotiated with him since pre-season all say to me that Helm is gone this summer. Holland likes to get his UFA's signed well before the playoffs usually.

Anyways, I've said all along he'll sign with EDM or WPG. Close to home, and he's the kind of player you want on young, talented teams that don't know how to win yet.

First day of free agency, strikes out on a forward or two, and comes crawling back with a sweet offer.

also known as "pulling a Quincey"

Its too bad that first round draft pick Quincey cost this organization didn't come crawling back

Let Helm walk. AA takes his place. Cheaper with more upside at this point. Gives us some cap space to try and get a real D corps. Especially if Datsyuk retires. We would need the couple extra mills.

If eating Daytsuk's contract prevents a Helm signing then it is a really good thing. Holland's ineptitude swings around to become a positive and he accidentally makes the team better.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I like Helm, but I am tired of seeing him constantly fan on shots, especially when he has a wide open net.
