OP is nonsense. Nurse is often guilty of trying to do too much, but he is unquestionably a top pairing D. He is big, extremely smooth skating, durable, and plays ridiculous minutes on a thin blue line. Would Oilers fans be happier if he was paid $7M per? Obviously. But he’s a core piece of this group, a BFF of McDavid and Draisaitl and is irreplaceable to this roster that is trying to win right now. He’s very good. $7M good, just not $9M good.

And this”worst contract in the league” garbage? Anyone spouting that is purely trolling. This is a league in which Erik Karlsson makes $11M, Jeff Skinner and Jamie Benn make $9M. Kevin Hayes makes $7.1 ffs.

The way Nurse skates, I’m pretty confident the contract will age better than a lot of overpayments too. If some degree of normalcy returns to the economics of the game and the salary cap incrementally rises in the coming years, Nurses contract might eventually not even be detrimental. Time will tell.

So mods you have a post started by the op saying he was doing it for the clicks, no thought just wanted the reaction… aaaannnd it’s still up. Trolls do your work cause mods here seem to be the same as the DOPS can’t be consistent in anything…

At worst Nurse is a high-end #2D. At his best you could argue he's a lower tiered #1D. Nurse is overpaid. 2 million per in my opinion. He's still a top pairing D even if you're being overly critical of the player vs contract.

OEL is a 3-4 guy now. Clearly no longer a top tier top pairing guy. His contract also isn't great.

I'd rather have an overpaid top pairing guy vs an overpaid 2nd pairing one. You'd have to be quite the homer to say you'd pick OEL + contract over Nurse + contract. Yet here we are on HF where I expect someone to say you'd have to include multiple 1st rounders with Nurse for OEL.

As for the OP, neither side does this. That Vancouver pick could be quiet high and they aren't at the point to be trading more 1st rounders away. Edmonton isn't down grading on D to add a pick when they are trying to become a contender (I know the Oilers aren't a contender-it's the direction they are trying to go). That Nurse overpayment proves management while incompetent is going for it.

Unfortunately we have both . See Keith . Anyways if we were considering trading Nurse I would go after Chychrun first then trade Nurse for a goalie ++ . OEL would be the last D I would want .

Nurse is not a top pairing d, don't let Holland's shitty negotiation tactics fool you !

So Vancouver would have to add $2M to their cap and give up a 1st? Don't see that happening as any difference between the two is not worth that.

Because OEL is worse as a player, his contract is worse, and he is declining, where Nurse is at his peak (or still improving, but probably peak).
Not sure how OELs contract is worse given Nurse has a full 8 year $9.25M starting next year while OEL has 5 years left and 12% is retained by Arizona for those 5 years.

Because while Nurse is a top pairing defenseman making close to elite defenseman money, OEL is a regressing 2nd pair defenseman making top pair money. Both are on long term deals, but OEL is overpaid by more than Nurse is. You afraid to put what OEL's cap hit to Vancouver is? Even with retention, CapFriendly has him taking 7.2M in cap. For a guy that's playing like a 2nd pairing defenseman, that's atrocious, regardless of retention by Arizona.

Nurse really isn’t that much better than OEL making elite defenceman money. That’s the issue, he’s not worth the extra 2+ million for an extra 3 years

Hard Pass from Canucks POV.

Nurse's contract will be one of the worst value contracts in the league in the next couple of years. 8 years long too..woof.

Only way id do that for the Canucks is if OEL is going the other way and even then i'd be hesitant to do as OEL is only in for 5 more years at 6.5 mil.
