Bret ended up being right. SI interview last June:

“Daniel Bryan is finished,” said Hart. “He’ll never wrestle again. I don’t think he knows it yet. I feel terrible about Daniel Bryan. For all intents and purposes, he had the exact same thing happen to him that happened to me after Bill Goldberg kicked me in the head [ending Hart’s career].

“One day, you learn it’s over. Doctors tell you that you can’t wrestle and you’ll never wrestle again. I lost millions of dollars because of that. I pray that it’s not the same for Daniel Bryan.”

Bryan’s attempted comeback included many of the same dangerous maneuvers that were part of his repertoire before the neck injury.

“I saw him in a lot of his matches after he came back from the injury, and he was taking suplexes on the back of his head, powerbombs, and other really dangerous moves,” said Hart. “I know he wanted to test it out, but I think he may have pushed himself too hard. He’s like Dynamite Kid in the sense that they’re both tough and neither wanted to admit that injuries got the best of them. He’s finished forever, but I don’t think he’s even realized that. He’s probably thinking, ‘Maybe it will get better in a few months,’ but unfortunately, I don’t think it will.”

The April 2nd, 2015 SmackDown match vs Sheamus is when he got the final concussion. Same match where his forehead got split open and he needed stitches to close it. He wrestled eight more matches and then got sent home from the European tour. Pretty sad to watch now knowing this is the beginning of the end. =\

Someone else wrote it, but it rings true and makes me misty again.

DB spoke about how much he loved wrestling. He described it point by point, and then said it was us fans that brought him to all the success this business would allow.

Not all the blood, sweat, and tears he put his body though. He gave credit to the fans. In this sad moment he gave us the credit and was happy we were apart of his world.

This is an amazing human being.

Well now you just reminded me of my dream Wrestlemania scenario where Punk and Bryan go at it with both retiring right afterwards.

One last thing, the crowd in the arena were chanting "daniel bryan" and "yes" non-stop during the commercial break before bryan came out.

Daniel Bryan reminded me why I love wrestling so much. That ride to Wrestlemania 30 was unlike anything else.

Of course it's terrible for fans that he's retiring, and it's very sad for Bryan himself since he loved wrestling so much, but I have nothing but respect for him for putting his health first and foremost. I'll always appreciate him as a performer and am thankful that his big run came back when I was still watching and paying attention every week.

A HOF induction is a no-brainer at this point and I'd think he'd jump at the chance to be a producer or something in the WWE so he can still travel with his wife.

I'm trying to think of one wrestler similar to DB in terms of likability for such a long period of time. Someone who wasn't pushed but had to be pushed due to the insane crowd roars and take-over moments.

I honestly cannot think of one. DB is seriously a one of a kind talent.
