I'm not hopeful either, but two things need to be repeated here:

1. If Bylmsa stays, then Shero's fate in inextricably tied to his. Another debacle, and they're both done.

2. I wouldn't read so much into 'it taking so long'. You had to assume there would be ownership/upper management meetings the last two days. I'd suspect you might hear something one way or another by tonight, tomorrow morning at the earliest. Can't imagine Shero wanting to do a presser with that one hanging over him one way or another. Then again, even that wouldn't totally surprise.

Does Mario lean on Crosby for input? I have no idea if Crosby is a fan of Dan, but if he isn't Bylsma may be gone no matter what Shero wants. Crosby wasn't exactly all in with his comments. We didn't execute the gameplan is like saying no team can execute this crap gameplan.

it's still a pipedream in my opinion. Madden also pushed rumors of a Malkin trade years ago, so i take what he says about hockey with a grain of salt.

This is coming from a guy who's seen Mario pre and post retirement live, been to pens games at 4 different arenas, payed for glass seats to see Brian Holzinger and a bunch of losers get smacked around by Columbus, watched most of the games the year Dick Tarnstrom led the team in scoring...

But that scenario could be my breaking point where I need a break from the Pens.

I've been thinking the same thing. I live overseas now, and stay up really odd hours just to watch the Pens. I'm not sure if that will be as easy to do if Shero announces a Bylsma extension tomorrow.

I don't doubt the Pens will still be fun to watch, or that they'll still enjoy regular season success. But the postseason results will be the same embarrassment as long as Disco stays. It's really hard to watch the talent we have get wasted as long as he's still behind that bench.

The Penguins won't be able to get Tippett until July 1 as that's when his contract in Phoenix expires. The Coyotes really don't want to let Tippett go, so it's unlikely the Penguins will get him before then. The Penguins can't wait that long to make a decision on Bylsma.

Makes perfect sense EXCEPT for one thing. If Tippett is perfectly happy in Phoenix no matter what and Don Maloney would've been perfectly happy to sign him to a contract extension a month ago, then why is there no deal? There's nothing that would've prevented him from signing one. IMO, he's waiting to see what his other options might be. Doesn't mean that he won't sign an extension in Phoenix, but for those thinking it's all but done, I am left to note that if that were the case, then it would've been done already.

All you have to do is listen to his after game interviews as well as the exit interview. Guy has lost grip with reality. I actually think he might need some help.... so bad...

Of all the available coaching candidates, I think it's safe to narrow it down to 4 guys. Torts, Ruff, Boucher and Maurice. This organization isn't going to make a big gamble by bringing in anyone that doesn't have a track record with a certain amount of recent success and they aren't going to bring in anyone that's been out of the game for half a decade either. And they will of course conduct interviews and that sort of thing, but I think it'll come down to a coach's body of work in the past and how likely they are to have success with *this* team right now. Anybody can interview well. That's how Olczyk got the head coaching job.

Tortorella: He has the best resume of the bunch. A Cup, A Jack Adams, 2 more nominations. He teaches accountability but doesn't stifle elite offensive players. His negatives are that he probably has a short shelf-life as a coach because of his abrasiveness and his other antics.. and his negative comments about the Penguins organization might hurt his stance not only with our management but with certain players in the room.

Ruff: Probably the safest pick in the bunch. He doesn't have Torts' resume but he doesn't come with any baggage either. He's just a solid coach. He's won the Jack Adams once and been to the Finals once. His teams aren't purely run and gun and they aren't purely trap teams either, they're hybrids and they can play multiple styles and win many different ways. He seems like a good mix between a straight ball-buster and a player-friendly guy. His lack of success with a loaded Buffalo team that finally went out and spent to the cap is a concern though.

Maurice: Not the best of the bunch as far as past success but he might have an edge in that he already has an idea of what buttons to push with Malkin.. and he's also coached Jokinen and Adams previously. His teams tend to be pretty tough defensively if nothing else. He went to the Finals once in 02.

Boucher: The weakest choice of the bunch IMO. Too inexperienced prior to coming to the NHL and I think that while Tampa Bay isn't exactly a great roster they still probably underachieved the last 2 seasons under him. And while I don't care what system the team employs as long as it works, the 1-3-1 is in my opinion ineffective.

So I think with that you narrow it down to Tortorella and Ruff... And go either with the higher-risk higher-reward Torts or the safer Ruff.

I'm not sure it's a 100% guarantee that the Coyotes will still be playing in Arizona next year. I suspect that might be the holdup, as it was with Doan.

Well Despres should have been in the lineup all season and maybe just maybe Shero doesn't spend 2 2nd rounders on Murray

As for Bennett his play was excellent all season and playoffs as well, can't believe he benched him for most of them

Good summary. I see zero chance that Torts is signed but maybe a no BS guy is needed for this team right now.

I forgot about Vigneault... But I consider him a lesser candidate than Ruff and Torts, so I think it's still down to those two. Vigneault's teams tend to have the same playoff issues Bylsma's do, so while their styles are different it seems like a lateral move.
