Dallas Stars will move to Plano

As always when a team does this, it’s a broader real estate play masquerading as an arena project
The problem with the current arena for both the Stars and Mavs is neither team's owner owns all of the parking and development around the AAC. I believe the former Mavs owner Ross Perot Jr. still owns a lot of the buildings around the AAC.

This is why both teams are moving. They will each now get to own all of the revenue each arena and their surroundings generate. With Plano paying for most of it, this will make the Stars wildly profitable going into the future.

Plano is a very nice area so I could see it working but is the team going to pay for the arena itself of do they expect Plano to pay for it and then turn it over to the team?
No more sweetheart deals for billionaires. Ridiculous. Give them everything on top of overcharging the community. Screw these owners

Usually when a team moves to a suburb like this it's because they're a tenant in a massive real estate project. Billions at stake. Butts in the seats is cool, but have you heard about land sales?!?

I'm just looking it up now though and the Stars and Mavericks are moving to separate new arenas that are only a few miles apart. Seems kind of dumb. It was already dumb, now it's dumber.

9 times out of 10 when team owners complain about a poorly run city, that means they weren't given enough of the public's money. The running of a city has little bearing on the team outside of that.
Bingo. These owners are mostly scumbag leeching off public funds...some are not though...

All about the Benjamins. City owns the arena. Someone else owns the parking and land around.

DFW is a huge area. Current location would appear more convenient for the airports, but I don't know where most of the team's fans commute from.

I believe Ottawa's team doesn't actually play in Ottawa either, they're like 20-25 minutes out but Ottawa is still the closest major city so they kept that name
Kanata was amalgamated into Ottawa, but yeah. It's still pretty much its own suburb, sort of like Plano to Dallas
Similar too to Tempe - Phoenix? Though I guess they were called Arizona by that time

I was gonna say.... that building isnt even that old.

But I didnt know they were only leasing it. Makes sense now.

Dallas is a top-3 worst city in America. Don’t blame them for moving farther out.
Really? What makes it so bad?

I always thought Houston had the worst reputation for a big city in Texas, but I have no personal opinion on either.

I'll have you know I can walk a long way. We don't drive here.

I lived there half of my life. You can walk to the Bronx but I’m not sure that would be a great walk. It also depends what time of day and what the weather is like and where you are starting from. How about this. There are times it would be quicker to walk to Yankee Stadium than to take a bus or a subway or a cab.

It’s a completely soulless place. It’s just my opinion of course — but I’ve never had a good experience there except to watch the Hawks win last year.

The Bears are moving out of Chicago to a neighbouring city because of inept local government....so why should the Stars be any different? If local government puts up barriers to a team's success, be it in the form of higher taxes or refusal to work with them on a new arena, cutting a better deal elsewhere (yet still within striking distance for your fanbase) is just good business.
