Dallas Stars will move to Plano

But why.... Do they think a new arena is going to attract more fans then being more centrally located to all of them? Their current arena is in dead center Dallas.

Plano is 30 minutes north of there, and not even in the direction you would want to go to be more centrally located (west towards Fort Worth).

From what I understand, it's because the city of Dallas has a horrendously run government and all of the sports teams want to move out of the city because of the city government.

Was discussed a lot on the Stars subreddit yesterday:

I don’t love this from the Stars but at the same time, it makes me sad to see Dallas so poorly run. With actual decent city leadership, it’s possible that the city could’ve kept the two teams but they’ve bungled it all, not just sports.

This was likely to happen regardless of that lol. Cuban was already talking about the possibility of the mavs doing what they’re currently doing before he sold the team. Most of this is firmly on how the city has handled things.

Ah, wasn't sure, but still seems odd to keep another cities name when you aren't there anymore.

They'd be far from the first professional team that "represents" the primary city in an urban area without their home venue actually being within the city proper, and still names themselves after that city. Hell, the New York Giants and Jets play in a stadium that's just across the state line in New Jersey. :dunno:

Never knew that about the NFL teams.

Ah, yeah, it's an interesting geography in that area with urban development around New York City. Pretty narrow strip of land connecting to upstate New York (with Long Island on the other side of it), straddled by Connecticut and New Jersey. Plenty of people commute into New York City from Connecticut since it's a pretty short commute, and it's the same with New Jersey. It's all kind of one big urban conglomeration of sorts, with the municipality across the state line in New Jersey being Newark, which is also where the New Jersey Devils play (their arena is only like 11 miles from Madison Square Garden I believe). Also, Newark International Airport is one of the major airports that serves the New York City area.

This seems odd. I understand wanting to be sole tenant of the arena and not having to share revenue, DFW can probably support two major arenas but wow. Does it really make sense to move to a suburb? Their attendance seems fine as is, this isn't really a Braves situation where they wanna move closer to their core fanbase/STH's.
