Dallas Stars will move to Plano

I would bet that the majority of the Stars fans tend to be from the North Dallas suburbs, and Plano would be closer for all of them. And while others will have a slightly longer trip - as a Dallas resident I would bet that the actual time difference will be relatively small for the others because they get to avoid all the downtown traffic.

Is say Arlington to Plano faster than going to downtown Dallas?

It's in the ballpark of a similar amount of time. It's probably twice as far, but you can jump on the George Bush expressway and make it in a similar amount of time. It'll really just depend on how close the "Entertainment Zone" is from the expressway. I always had a hard time getting back on the expressway from the parking around the American Airline center downtown.

I think for the vast majority of people, this will either be better, or only slightly worse (extra 10-15 minutes).

For those that don't know - the majority of the growth in the DFW metroplex is the North Dallas region where their putting this arena. Most of the more expensive neighborhoods are there as well.

It's depressing when major cities have a totally dead downtown area. Dallas is one of them. It's all in the suburban areas there.

Source: me being there once ever.

Ah, wasn't sure, but still seems odd to keep another cities name when you aren't there anymore.
Ottawa Senstors weren't even based in Ottawa for 5 and a half seasons; Washington Capitals were based in Maryland; Detroit Pistons were in Auburn Hills; LA Rams and Chargers play in Inglewood; Kings and Lakers were there for 30 years; Toronto Rock are in Hamilton; LA Angels are in Anaheim; Dallas Cowboys played outside of Dallas..Irving?

Lot of precedents

But why.... Do they think a new arena is going to attract more fans then being more centrally located to all of them? Their current arena is in dead center Dallas.

Plano is 30 minutes north of there, and not even in the direction you would want to go to be more centrally located (west towards Fort Worth).

Usually when a team moves to a suburb like this it's because they're a tenant in a massive real estate project. Billions at stake. Butts in the seats is cool, but have you heard about land sales?!?

I'm just looking it up now though and the Stars and Mavericks are moving to separate new arenas that are only a few miles apart. Seems kind of dumb. It was already dumb, now it's dumber.

From what I understand, it's because the city of Dallas has a horrendously run government and all of the sports teams want to move out of the city because of the city government.

Was discussed a lot on the Stars subreddit yesterday:

9 times out of 10 when team owners complain about a poorly run city, that means they weren't given enough of the public's money. The running of a city has little bearing on the team outside of that.

That would make sense as to why the Stars are willing to move there. Getting gov money.
For the Stars sake and the NHL's this better not be another Glendale situation. Location matters, even with an arena that is virtually not going to cost them anything.

But, man, their current arena opened in 2001 in July. Just getting to 25 years and they are going elsewhere probably within 5 years.

the Stars are a much more established franchise than the gongshow that was Arizona/Phoenix

Meh, not that I live in the area or have a dog in the fight, but the name of the city isn't always relevant. Whether historically based on the team location where they began or if it's a greater "insert city name" area, the location name doesn't always seem to be important.

It does make it easier for teams named Tampa Bay (an area/body of water) Golden State Warriors, New England Patriots, or Carolina Panthers/Hurricanes. Tampa Bay is one area but more than one city, New England and Carolina could be in at least two states. Then you have the various teams named for an entire state, so their area isn't geographically limited IE Utah, Florida, Colorado, etc.

The Redskins in Maryland, Giants/Jets play in New Jersey, Braves in Cobb County, Dolphins play in Miami Gardens. And those are just the current ones I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure historically it's happened quite a few times.

So I feel for Dallas fans living in the different area, but at the end of the day keeping the name Dallas makes the most sense.

How about when you were never there in the first place?

They'd be far from the first professional team that "represents" the primary city in an urban area without their home venue actually being within the city proper, and still names themselves after that city. Hell, the New York Giants and Jets play in a stadium that's just across the state line in New Jersey. :dunno:

That's why they should be called the New Jersey Giants and the New Jersey Jets. There is only one football team in New York, the Buffalo Bills.

The Angels actually did begin life in Los Angeles proper, playing first in Wrigley Field (the one in LA that the former Pacific Coast League Angels played in, and where numerous movies were filmed) and then Dodger Stadium, before Angel Stadium was built.

As someone originally from Orange County, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim was incredibly stupid and the LA Angels irks me.

That being said, the Angels did originally play in LA county as the Los Angeles Angels. Despite playing in Anaheim since the 60s, they were only known as the Anaheim Angels for about 15 years due to them being purchased by Disney.
