I would bet that the majority of the Stars fans tend to be from the North Dallas suburbs, and Plano would be closer for all of them. And while others will have a slightly longer trip - as a Dallas resident I would bet that the actual time difference will be relatively small for the others because they get to avoid all the downtown traffic.
It's in the ballpark of a similar amount of time. It's probably twice as far, but you can jump on the George Bush expressway and make it in a similar amount of time. It'll really just depend on how close the "Entertainment Zone" is from the expressway. I always had a hard time getting back on the expressway from the parking around the American Airline center downtown. Is say Arlington to Plano faster than going to downtown Dallas?
Here’s an idea—they should rename them the Dallas North Stars
Is Dallas going to be the first 4-sport city with no teams that reside in the city proper?
Mavs are staying in Dallas, just a new locationIs Dallas going to be the first 4-sport city with no teams that reside in the city proper?
Ottawa Senstors weren't even based in Ottawa for 5 and a half seasons; Washington Capitals were based in Maryland; Detroit Pistons were in Auburn Hills; LA Rams and Chargers play in Inglewood; Kings and Lakers were there for 30 years; Toronto Rock are in Hamilton; LA Angels are in Anaheim; Dallas Cowboys played outside of Dallas..Irving?Ah, wasn't sure, but still seems odd to keep another cities name when you aren't there anymore.
But why.... Do they think a new arena is going to attract more fans then being more centrally located to all of them? Their current arena is in dead center Dallas.
Plano is 30 minutes north of there, and not even in the direction you would want to go to be more centrally located (west towards Fort Worth).
From what I understand, it's because the city of Dallas has a horrendously run government and all of the sports teams want to move out of the city because of the city government.
Was discussed a lot on the Stars subreddit yesterday:
Additionally, pull up a map of where the rinks are in the metroplex. All North of I-30. That's where the kids play hockey and where their fan base isNot odd at all. The majority of the Stars STH’s reside in the Plano area..
That would make sense as to why the Stars are willing to move there. Getting gov money.
For the Stars sake and the NHL's this better not be another Glendale situation. Location matters, even with an arena that is virtually not going to cost them anything.
But, man, their current arena opened in 2001 in July. Just getting to 25 years and they are going elsewhere probably within 5 years.
How about when you were never there in the first place?Ah, wasn't sure, but still seems odd to keep another cities name when you aren't there anymore.
They'd be far from the first professional team that "represents" the primary city in an urban area without their home venue actually being within the city proper, and still names themselves after that city. Hell, the New York Giants and Jets play in a stadium that's just across the state line in New Jersey.![]()

lol
the dallas cowboys play in arlington
almost the exact same distance as plano. people just need an excuse to bitch
The Angels actually did begin life in Los Angeles proper, playing first in Wrigley Field (the one in LA that the former Pacific Coast League Angels played in, and where numerous movies were filmed) and then Dodger Stadium, before Angel Stadium was built.
As someone originally from Orange County, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim was incredibly stupid and the LA Angels irks me.
