Thinking about those pre-season expectations for Kopitar and Gaborik makes me quite sad.

Those were all unrealistic expectations. Gabby hasn't played a full season or scored 30G since 2011-12

Kopitar is not an Elite offensive Center like Crosby or Malkin. He is not going to put up 50+ assists a year.

Kopitar had to get incredible hot after the break last year, too simply reach his career average of 70 points.

This. I expect one more big season out of Kopitar where he breaks 80 again, a career year essentially, but he'll always be Mats Sundin lite in the points department.

Sutter Post game from the LA kings insider

On whether the three unsuccessful first period power plays were “game-changersâ€:

Our power play’s not going to win or lose us games. The power gave us a chance in the third. I thought our penalty killing was not as good as our power play.

SOmetimes I wonder if he's watching the same game.

He ****s with the media on purpose, Dee. Seemingly, after a loss, he'll say we played a great game. Also, during a playoff series, he'll repeatedly say we played better in our losses than our wins. He'll say something along the lines that "our first period was our best period" when in fact it was the worst.

I think he gets a kick out of being contrarian in these situations.

How often to the Kings get caught on a bad line change?

Richards currently leads the team in scoring on the road. Who's the 2nd forward on that list? Clifford. 4th forward on that list? Lewis. There go some of your road issues.

The Kings needs to trade for Mad Max

So now we're flush in secondary scoring, and the top guys go into hibernation. Typical.

Gotta look at the bright side. Easier to sign. These guys will step up in he playoffs.

McNabb had kind of a stinker of a game. Kings should have won.

In retrospect, I'm not even going to overanalyze this game anymore because it's Dallas and they have a habit of making us play stupid somehow. That first shift was a good sign for the rest of the game!

Can't say any dman played well, at all.

Richards and Stoll have both been performing like the top two centers on the team, which is why Carter was back at wing and Kopitar was benched on the PP in the 3rd.

This team badly needs another second pairing dman. They lost two with the departure of Mitchell and Voynov's indefinite suspension. Problem is, what's out there as a realistic option?

The Flames were said to be shopping Denis Wideman but that contract is just too much. Getting Yandle out of Phoenix would be a great pickup as well but I'm not sure if that's feasible as well.

Time to trade them both!

Yeah, Sutter interviews are pretty easy to understand if you just keep in mind they are driven by only 2 things:

-The team is watching, so he will make statements to the media about them to motivate/keep down to earth/re-enforce a message.
-The media asks some stupid questions and may not really even understand the game, and he is there out of obligation.

I threw up in my mouth a little.

Yeah, it's pretty sad, but we all know that 5 hot games by any particular player can change the whole "pace" thing in a hurry. If Kopitar is still on pace to score 20 goals and 40 points at the half way point at the season, that won't be good.

11-12, 19th at home, 10th on the road
12-13, 1st at home, 22nd on the road
13-14, 14th at home, 6th on the road

So far in 14-15, 1st at home, 29th on the road

It's weird, when the Kings are better at home than on the road, there seems to be a different feel to them. At least in this Cup window. The Blues probably should've won that series in 2013, if not for Quick. The Kings couldn't score on the road against the Sharks in 2013. Then they just weren't much of a match against the Hawks that year either.

Of course the road exploits in both 2012 and 2014 are etched in the minds of Kings fans forever.

The defense in 2012 and 2014 were very similar. In 2013 and this year though, a different story. No Mitchell or Greene in 2013, and Martinez was out a bit. No Mitchell and Voynov this year, and Martinez is again out for a bit. Muzzin was a rookie then, McNabb is a rookie now.

McNabb minus 3. The one where Stoll in backing in more and more will drive a d nuts. It's like Stoll is in the way of either McNabb or Greene making a play by stepping up. The other two on McNabb though. It relates to his wanting to play overaggressive.

When you watch replay of first goal, he's beginning to line up a hit, and the puck gets chipped past him and leaves Greener hung out to dry on a 2-1. If he just played d, it'd probably be alright. But, people like the hits. Well, this is an example of a failed hit, even though he doesn't get to within 3 to 4 feet of the guy.

Second, someone earlier called it a bad line change on the goal where Lehtonen gets the assist on Sequin goal. I disagree. The line change was fine. Problem was McNabb, who was still out on ice, creeping up on the wing near the Dallas blue line, maybe expecting to pick off a pass and score, or another big hit, and he's caught in never, neverland, as the pass goes right up the middle. The funny thing is when you watch Dought coming on the ice from the bench, he sees all this right away, and is like, Oh Shxt!!! McNabb should have been more observant of his teammates making a line change, and should have been a safety valve.

When he starts getting confidence, he starts leaning forward on the ice, either for the hits or the pinch. However, it's not always smart hockey. And, he doesn't have the quickness and speed to recover once committed. He can play well, but he needs to understand more who he is, and what his limitations are. Put another way, he needs to play within himself.

I agree with your main points of your post.

I'd like to point out the word "rookie" now, and I know you probably weren't thinking too much about it when you used it, but McNabb is certainly is new to the Kings.

Rookie:

To be considered a rookie, a player must not have played in more than 25 NHL games in any preceding seasons, nor in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons. Any player at least 26 years of age (by September 15th of that season) is not considered a rookie.

For McNabb, he played 25 games for Buffalo three seeasons ago. Then, two seasons ago, he played zero games for Buffalo, and then last year, he played 12 games for Buffalo, which totals to 37, which is more than the 25 in any preceding seasons. Ironically, his 12 game call up from the AHL last year all aligned with a suspension of Tyler Myers.

For Kings fans, which is different to think about, is that Pearson still meets the qualifications of a rookie, and Toffoli just missed it. Yet, we might not necessarily think of these two guys as rookies now.

I agree with all the points of your post. Especially McNabb and Muzzin, who for all intents and purposes, were/are rookies.

I was still cranky this morning over this loss. There is no reason why they should've lost to the Stars last night. Getting sick of these putrid 1st periods on the road. Can't always play catchup and expect to win.

Yeah I think Dallas was the Kings' best chance at getting a win out of this road trip. I've been watching a lot of Preds games and I'm not confident the Kings can pull out a win against them. Unless they play like they're playing the Canucks.

I agree !! Nashville is pretty damn good early!! You toss in how pumped teams get to play the defending champs, and it's like the Preds are playing their most hated rival. It's not the same intensity if it's the Preds in la. It's the fact that it's in Nashville and the media and the hype about the champs coming to town is way overhyped!!! It's like if they win, the marketing dept turns its focus on that their team could win a Stanley Cup!! It's this dynamic that the team will face all year on the road!! I see a lot of posts that go straight to the team being in the playoffs, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they didn't make the playoffs!! It's not easy just making the playoffs.
