Dale Hawerchuk - 1963 -2020. Rest in peace

Can you imagine the numbers Hawerchuck would have put up if he had the talent 99 had around him to play with ? He put up amazing numbers anyway playing with alot of boarder line NHL players .

Dale is one of the main reasons I fell in love with the game. RIP Ducky. Winnipeg should truly feel honored to have been graced by his talent for as long as we did.
2020 really does suck when it starts taking your heroes on top of everything else.

Oh man, Dale with Kurri? That would have been insane. No offense to Big Mac and Mullen, but let's just say he made them look good.

When I was a kid, I lived in Edmonton during the Oilers dynasty years. Since I was born in Winnipeg, I was still a Jets fan. Dale Hawerchuk was my favorite player, and who I would say I was when playing ball hockey in gym class.

My son started playing hockey 2 years ago and wears #10. I picked that number because it was Hawerchuk's.

His passing hits me pretty hard since he is my all time favorite player.

My condolences to his family. RIP Ducky.

RIP Ducky. I was too young to remember the details that led to him being traded beyond he didnt like like the (then) new GM Mike Smith.

Did some online checking and some of the info I found is that Dale thought Smith provided a "negative" atmosphere and he lacked "community spirit " Some apparently inferred the later comment indicated Dale was against Smith bringing in allot of Europeans .I find this hard to believe based on what I've heard about Dale's character. . Theres always 2 sides to every story but I was not able to find what Smith thought about the negative atmosphere comment.

To those who may be in the know , why was Ferguson let go and for someone who alienated their franchise player? Today if a player like Sidney Crosby but heads with the GM to the point on him wanting to leave., ownership would likely just get a new GM. Ofcouse timess have changed since then

GM Mike Smith appearantly was not well liked. Everything I read about the Ferguson situation was that Smith had somehow managed to get into Owner Barry Shankerow's ear, and repeatedly tell him that Fergie was a dinosaur, and that his cognitive abilities were declining. I've heard from at least two sources, that Ferguson never talked to Smith again after his dismissal in the fall of 1988.

I've never interpreted what Ducky said about being a community-based as a shot at Europeans. From everything I heard, Ferguson was a man who would invite and encourage Jets players to live in the city, and throw parties and BBQ'a at his residence, while Smith was a guy who did not care one way or another.

It should be noted that Smith also drove Phil Housley, the man he traded Ducky for, out of town, after the year he assisted on most of Temmu Selanne's goals in his rookie season. It was said they had some type of fallout at a New Year's 1993 party, after a few drinks. I never understood why Smith felt the need to undermine his star player, and ultimately drive Hawerchuk from the community, when he wanted to retire in Winnnipeg.

Thanks for the insight. Still, if Smith was so widely disliked , why would Shankerow hire/keep him after alienating others? I would also be interested to hear what Smith's account is/was. Obviously I would not expect him to say "yeah I was a gutless snitch and a jerk" but would still be curious to see how he would spin it.

Yah. Times were different from behind-the-scenes heirarchy of management and publicity, etc.
Probably more strong-arm tactics with negotiating players futures, value, worth, next contract stuff, that was never made clear to fans or media.

If he ever studied or got into politics, you know his "take" would be chocked full of b.s. babble speak that none of us would get a clear take on his actual recollection of events. COMPRANDE. NON.

Thanks for these points.
The old garbage dump should be called Mike Smith Pile. "Dump all your unwanted _ hit here!"
That's the impression Smith left for many of us.
Meanwhile, the positive and the good and the important topic, ideas, thought sharing should focus on "honoring Dale Hawerchuk" and maybe naming a valued site in the 'Peg, and/or a street name, or?
Forget the B.S.'ers, henchmen who did Dale wrong back in the day , and did the city, citizens, the province and fans wrong by losing the team!
"HALE to DALE" and consoling, caring sentiments to his family and closest friends, in this tough grieving time. Thank you Dale, for all you did left a lasting, positive impact on thousands of people.
R.I.P.

I'm still pissed off and sad about this, that Dale bio wouldn't play right for me so if anyone missed it here it is. I'm so lucky i got to shake his hand last year. :(

Buffalo fan here. I wanted to express sympathy to all the Hawerchuk family and friends and fans in Winnipeg. He was taken away much too soon. But he was brilliant and we in Buffalo were so lucky to have him, even if it was only five years. The master of the two foot pass. I once saw Hawerchuk from behind the net flip the puck over the net, go out in front and score. It was the most magnificent individual goal I ever saw. A great person, a great hockey man. Going to miss Dale. RIP.

Late to the wake - don't wanna get into why, but just couldn't get myself in here before now.

Thanks Dale, I hope you have found peace and I hope you keep looking down and holding your hand over the Jets!

I know people up there who are looking forward to welcoming you.

You were/are a legend!

What a great person. :(

Hadn’t seen that. Fantastic.

If only we could turn back the clock, talk some sense into Murdoch and Smith, and keep Ducky a Jet for his career.

If only the Jets would have surrounded him with a few more pieces. He deserved to win a Stanley Cup.

RIP Dale. You are cherished and will be missed.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Don't get the Winnipeg Free Press but i get flyers every week and there was a great 4 page insert on Dale done by the Free Press. :thumbu:

I wanted to post this INCREDIBLE video of an 18 year old Dale Hawerchuk and the Winnipeg Jets against the Toronto Maple Leafs! Check it out!

Who the hell was Larry Hopkins?
I don't remember him. He got in 60 NHL games and scored 29 points. It looked like most of them were in that game.
