When he been traded, he was also at a rate of 70 pts/season... probably also because of petersson

The same way torto is not the reason why Farabee is trash this season, its the same coach than last year when he reached carreer high 50 pts. He got this season because foerster, brink, laughton, konecny, michkov, tippett, cates, couturier all outplayed him and at 5M for an other 3, Briere didn't want to stick with him.

That’s 40% in year 1, 37% in year 2, 34.12% in year 3. Unless Colorado is under a really tight budget from ownership I can’t understand why they traded Rantanen.

It’s interesting to me that Colorado does not believe in the top heavy model when they won with that top heavy superstar led recipe just recently. But I suspect there’s real world money considerations at play. Not every organization has bottomless pockets.

Kronke owns many teams so probably imposed a tight internal budget. I do take Rantanen’s words at face value, I’m sure he was willing to take a discount prior to the number coming out. It’s crazy how a few days can change optics, if they get Rantanen at 12 or 11.75 that would have been a huge steal and also great for Brad for Marner negotiations.

I'll throw out a wild one...

Carolina does not seem like a team to be paying a winger the most or even 2nd most in the entire league, Aho isn't even making 10M, if Rantanen were to be hitting UFA...if you're Colorado, do you try to get Rantanen's rights and make it work before UFA?

Going way off topic but I think the cap jump will expose a big fault line between the haves and have nots in the NHL.

The tension I’m seeing is this parity driven Bettman system designed to pump up franchise valuations and fuel unsustainable rounds of expansion, versus where most sports leagues end up: big spending big market glamour teams fueled by star power and a big sea of window dressing teams.

The latter is more conducive to those marquee streaming games on Amazon. I think the NHL needs to let the Leafs grow into hockey’s version of the LA Dodgers and not stunt it.

Avs won the cup when MacKinnon was making 6.3 instead of 12.6

Since then they've had to dump their 2C, and 2LW and replace them with cheaper and significantly worse options while their #1LW hasn't played since and hasn't been replaced either.

The Avs have seen what being top heavy does to a team first hand and decided they aren't going to go any further down that road.

Sure why not. I’m sure MacKinnon amongst others will get in Marners ear at the 4 Nations.

Colorado's # for Rantanen seemed to be around 11.75 - 12M per, is that an aav Marner would be comfortable with?

Does 11.75M x 8 make more sense for Marner since he would accumulate more cash?
 
Cap projections are much higher than everyone thought. Marner gonna be asking for 16 mil to match his number. NHL superstars will finally be making as much as NBA bench players!

Sounds more like they wanted to move on from the player then it was about the money.

These projection won't stand. Wait to the T man starts up the trade wars and that sort of thing. In my mind these projections are pie in the sky.

Hawks last Cup was when Kane and Toews were making $6.3M as well. Kings when Doughty and Kopitar were $7M and $6.8M respectively. Crosby has been a playoff lion but never earned more than $8.7M. There seems to be strong evidence that a massive spend at the top of the roster isn't the way to go.

The context of those salaries are wildly different. What was their respective salary caps and their cap percentage? They also had no term limit. 6.5M 10-15 years ago isn't the same as the 6.5M today.

Sure but I don't think their GM makes the original trade unless he's confident he can make a competitive offer to Rantanen, they have a ton of cap flexibility

And TDL 5wks away. Even if he might be back they won't wait that long to make a move. ROR, Cozens, and Strome next up, assuming they want a C.?

ROR might not want to return, Adams may not even be allowed to trade Cozens, and Strome might not be seen as having enough offense to move the needle. Nelson or Pageau?

Good idea. It made me think we should also keep the final year of contracts at the very least without NMC. Basically makes it a team option and allows us to trade.

I hate NMCs altogether but if we must.
