Think he has a good chance of re-signing there though. Pickings will be slim in the marketplace this summer and Dallas isn't exactly loaded with young talent to trade for players.

They need to start making regular trips to the playoffs or there will be hell to pay in that front office. The ownership is tired of the mediocrity and there's no help coming on that 2nd line from their farm for at least another two years.

Gut feeling says Brassard winds up in Dallas before Monday or on July 1st to re-unite with Zucc. Rangers get a high 2nd this year and a 1st in a much stronger draft in 2020.

So most likely we got a late 2nd, and a 3rd.

They're a win now team. The worst the second would be would be in the mid-50s, as Dallas getting to the WCF makes it a first rounder. If they get there, it's a fair assumption that Zuccarello will be a big part of it, increasing the likelihood that he re-signs.

Is it likely that we end up with more than a 2nd and 3rd? Probably not, but I'm willing to roll the dice. Why not?

The Nash trade was a huge W. How does Zucc get less than him?

Essentially, it was Nash for a 1st and Lindgren.

Compare that to Zuccarello for a 2nd (most likely not going to become a 1st) and a 3rd that might become a 1st.

Maybe it’s about even (who am I kidding, it’s not), but Zucc should have gotten more than Nash. Bummer. Should have waited for a better deal, but oh well. Dallas wouldn’t give us Dellandrea. Hopefully Hayes gets more than a 1st.

Dallas in the WCF is an absolute pipe dream. The conditional 3rd to 1st if he re-signs smells kind of fishy on Nill's part. It would be pretty easy to lie just to lower the price and have no intention of actually re-signing Zucc. Gorton got himself swindled good.

My general sentiment about a "2nd and a prospect" was that that's not enough. And, we didn't even get that. We got a 46th-ish pick and a 70th-ish pick to replace Zuccarello.

The only way that this works is if we get those two picks and Zooks signs here in the summer. That looks dubious at best.

This is overly optimistic. Dallas has very low cap space so they would need to sacrifice the majority of that AND a 1st in a loaded 2020 draft to keep Zuccarello. Its fools gold and Gorton took it

That's an amazing trade imho.

The flaw in this logic is the assumption that each possibility is equally likely.

The first scenario you listed is probably 75% of all possible outcomes.

Unless Dallas goes on a cinderella run or Zuccarello gives Dallas an enticing UFA discount, we're not getting a first rounder.

Initially I was annoyed with this trade but I like the conditions. Huge risk but even if Zucc re-signs, we get a 1st and a 2nd. Dallas pick is likely late teens/early twenties
This can either be a great trade for NYR or a meh/bad one. I really hope Zucc lights it up for them so they re-sign him. This is a risky trade though

Of course this trade happens to go down when I’m in the shower though...
