Diving a little deeper into his stats, Rantanen has some interesting numbers this year.
Leads the league with 13 empty-net points & tied for lead with 7 empty-net goals. His powerplay point total isn't that far off from his empty net one this year (21 PP points).
He and MacKinnon (12 points) have feasted on empty nets this season
Hope he can pump up his even-strength goal numbers here these last however many games. Only has 11 so far this season (had 25 last year, 37 the year before). For comparison, 11 even strength goals puts him 7th on our team, 1 ahead of Harley and 1 behind Dadonov. The stint in Carolina affected that a bit.
The good news is, he's our even-strength points leader now with 49 on the season (Robertson 2nd at 48).
He's definitely having a "down" season goal-scoring wise even though he has 27 goals lol. Contract year, Carolina stint, etc. Can't help. Should hopefully play with some relief now after that contract extension/trade
Only thing I know we will have our picky moments about in his game is his PP movement. He's a very stationary player on the powerplay (basically identical to Jamie Benn in terms of movement and with turnovers when pressured), but his finishing is phenomenal and his one-timer is lethal. We just gotta set him up
These are just my thoughts after watching every goal of his from the past 5-6 seasons and then watching every point from this season too.
