D Erik Brannstrom (2017, 15th, VGK - Traded to OTT)

Posted these tweets I saw on the VGK page, but figured they would be useful here as well.

Brannstrom explaining what he needs to work on and hopes to be back in 2 years.

Fellow teammates praise.

How did Brannstrom muster 30 sog at the U18 tournament with a weak shot?
It doesn't take a good shot to blast pucks at the net. On the PP it's easy to shoot onetimers and such. He probably shot a good amount of his shots on the pp. The amount of shots you shoot doesn't tell anything about hte quality of your shot.

Brännström has a very good shot. Seen it both in J20 and in international games, it's one of his best attributes. One of few Swedish prospects who can actually one-time the puck.

No it's not. One of the hardest things to do for a defenseman is to get the puck on the net through crowds with any regularity.

If this was easy to do there would be many defensemen generating these kinds of shot totals in tournaments. But there aren't.

Will be the second best dman after Heiskanen, maybe the best, imo.

I'm just glad there hasnt been a leak (that i've seen) on who the Jets wanted at 13 so I don't need to start flipping tables thinking we'd missed out on him.

Such a great first round for Vegas.

Was really hoping for him at 17.

Wonder who will be better down the line, him or liljegren, should be interesting

Yeah very even between them 2 right now, and to me that has beeen the case for the last 2 seasons, not much has changed, i thought that even when Liljegren was rank 2 and Brannstrom not even in the first round.

A good team to be in for Brannstrom, not much competition, if he is good enough, not much stand in his way for becoming vegas PP1 guy.

Brannstrom had great aim. I just want to see more zip on his shot and to not be so hesitant to take slap shots.

Had Brännström ranked #4 before the draft, really happy to hear he's doing great at camp! :)

His shot isn't weak at all, he gets some pretty good power on his slappers.

Brannstrom's bread and butter is getting wrist shots through from the point, he has a very accurate wrister. Karlsson is also great at doing that.

Exactly. A defensemen that can actually get pucks through to the net is a lot more valuable then a guy with a big shot and well, can't get his shot through at all IMO.

Brannstrom will create a lot more scoring chances just because he is smart with his shot.

Yeah, he's an elite "lanefinder", underrated skill for an offensive dmen.

He's so good at it, a lot of pros could learn a thing or two watching him walk the blue line.

Could you post your top 10? Im curious to know if there will only be swedes in it, or if its just 5/10

Not sure why so snarky, but sure, this was my top 10.

1. Elias Pettersson
2. Nico Hischier
3. Nolan Patrick
4. Erik Brännström
5. Gabriel Vilardi
6. Miro Heiskanen
7. Timothy Liljegren
8. Cody Glass
9. Eeli Tolvanen
10. Nick Suzuki

That's bold.
To draft him no.1 is bold but to rank him no.1 isn't. Dude had one of the best statistical seasons scoring wise in the whole draft and is still so unpolished. Wouldn't surprise myself and many if hes the best player from this draft in 5 years.

Very interested in seeing how Brännström plays next year with the big team and how he handles that.

Huge fan of this kid. If he makes it, he's doing to be good. It's not a perfect example but he reminds me a lot of Krug.

He does say he models his game after EK but the product on the ice is more Vatanen or Krug styled.

But yes I was impressed with his ability to get the puck on net. He shot often and got it through often. I think in one of the scrimmages he got the puck on net 14 our of 19 attempts and no that's not an exaggeration.

I've seen him play pretty physical and doesn't shy away ever. The comparison I wrote down a few months ago is the current version of Ryan Ellis who also is a guy that gets his shots through a ton but uses a more powerful slap shot than Brannstrom.
