D David Reinbacher - EHC Kloten, NL (2023, 5th, MTL)

For what it is worth - Roman Josi in the NL in his draft year put up 8 points in 35 games played.

Reinbacher already has 14 in 28 games and is one of the highest producing first time draft eligible NL players in the history of the league. He is a defender btw.

I think some sleep on how impressive just the stat sheet is - let alone the eye test that shows his defensive prowess and ability’s in transition - plus a physical edge.

We have to be honest enough to say that he wouldn't have gotten this chance without his Swiss playing license. Still, not many defenders of similar age ever got this much TOI at NL level. And as you mentioned, his stats are impressive. He's also on a team that just got promoted so nobody can say that he's just a passenger on a strong team. Quite the opposite is the case. Curious to see where this is gonna lead and how his game is gonna translate to NA hockey.

Does he play a physical game too? Or more of a nasty temper?

Eye test and stat sheet have both looked good for me. WJC I think will help seal the deal if he's a First Round Pick. I still think so but it'd be nice to see that solidified.

WJC is first chance for me to see some good full games from him. Gonna be interesting tournament either way to watch some other prospects in better teams too.

This type of production from a draft eligible in a very good pro league is extremely impressive. Neither Rossi nor Kasper were able to do much in the WJC for Austria, if Rienbacher is able to make any sort of impact, I’d say he is in the top 5 conversation.

Great question - to piggy back on what Hinterland said, i’d lean toward nasty temper, but is still one of the more physical players in the draft from my viewings so far.

Sweet!

Rarely do you get a package this complete then, at least on paper. So many tools. Going to be really interesting to see how he develops.

He still needs to work on his lateral mobility and pucks skills from the blue line - but he has alot of interesting tools that many scouts will love.

As many have said, Reinbacher’s first step and lateral mobility will be issues if he doesn’t improve them. I didn’t love his decision making in the Sweden game, but no one on his team was any good so I won’t judge him too harshly.

Yeah - you can't take much out of that game. No one on Austria had good games, save from maybe Scherzer.

You could probably throw up red flags if he has a similar performance against Germany or Czechia - but to take away anything definitive against Canada and Sweden wouldn't be fair to the individual player.

How was hus performance against Czechia?

I think it‘s hard to judge him because pf this tournament, because austria isn‘t good enough for this level of hockey in this tournament!

I meand he plays against men in the swiss league, and his stats are very good in this league, but it‘s hard in an austrian team where no player is even close to this level from the other countries?

Really tough to evaluate him. There's no support for him and Rohrer.

He won player of the game - if that means anything…

I quite like this player.

I think there's a very good chance he's a 2nd pairing defenceman in the NHL and it won't take very long for him to become that.

I‘ll have to rewatch the game when I get back to the hotel and post some clips on twitter but holy hell was he impressive tonight.

Physically imposing, never giving up on a play, while being one of the few players on that Austria team that was able to drive any sort of offence, shoutout Ian Scherzer also, he was terrific.

Yeah he was impressive. Potential to be a very good defenseman.

Funny thing is that I can see him falling to some SC contender like Boston, TB or the AVs and then having a great NHL career, guy is a defender like mentioned above.

Despite his team's struggles, he had a nice showing in a tournament where the Austrians were clearly overmatched. Yes, there were some warts, but the intrigue about this guy's game is going to grow. I'll be trying to find some HC Kloten games to see how he does in club level NLA action.

Safe to say he played well at the WJC.

Just browsing the article that one is from and interesting to see where my viewing lines up with theirs (and others) and where it doesn't.
If you don’t mind me asking, what are the differences? I didn’t get to watch Reinbacher as much as I’d hoped to, so I’m curious.

They seem to think there is offensive game to bring forth which I was not expecting from earlier articles. I haven't seen him enough, honestly, so it's all thin slicing against competition that is superior but I liked some of what he did just to move pucks against what amounted to an avalanche of opposition. I'm hoping to get in some viewings of Kloten to see if he uses the U20 experience as a bump for his club play, something where the balance of each team is closer to see what sort of things he can do.
